If bail had been set and he posted it, it would have happened anyway. You're still missing the point of bail reform, which is to eliminate the unfair premise that the poor must stay in jail while awaiting trial, while those with more means can go free and effectively take part in their own defense. Bail is just legalized ransom. |

I know it’s anecdotal, but at least downstate the Judges bent over backwards to set bail at a level that the Defendant could afford if the Judge felt that bail was necessary. This was a “solution” in search of a problem. The same “problem” could be solved by giving Judges the discretion in misdemeanor cases and more limited felonies than the bail deform law provides to suspend enforcement of bail conditions for the first offense. This way if the person keeps getting picked up for criminal activity the Judge can then revoke the bail and remand to custody. |

And you know for a fact that he would have returned to court on his return date? That's what bail is for. It's security the same as security when renting an apartment. The judge might set low bail or no bail if he thinks the subject will return and high bail if he deems the subject a flight risk. He couldn't be convicted of these "alleged" crimes if he disappears.Calling bail Legalized ransom is one of the stupidest things I've heard in years, not counting Luch's posts. |

Bail is the money people must pay to be set free. Judges are known to impose extortionately high bail for indigent prisoners knowing full well that they present no flight risk. The defendant's color is sometimes an aggravating factor, and sometimes it's a defendant's social status. Bail is a tool to ensure that detainees who have no money or are in socially marginalized groups, stay incarcerated. Kinda hard to participate meaningfully in your own defense from jail, with severely limited access to legal counsel. The system knows that, and so do you. |

Maybe where you live in Pennsylvania, but where I am in New York it was laughable how low bail was before this law was passed. Most misdemeanors and many low level felonies saw ROR and, in the rare cases of bail, rarely in excess of $1,000. This is not like Law & Order where seemingly every charge resulted in remand or six figure bail. |
