| A new kitten! | |
| Posted by Peter Rosa on Sat Nov 11 16:30:42 2006Our cat Baci had a kitten around noon yesterday. While it's unusual for a cat to give birth to just one kitten at a time, it's not unprecedented. I had Thursday off of work, and Baci spent most of the day either (1) rubbing up against me and purring, or (2) savagely attacking the other cats, so we figured it wouldn't be long. We were preparing a seldom-used food closet in the back for Baci to use but she had other ideas, and had the kitten in the living room coat closet. The little kitten is so cute! It's mostly gray with dark stripes, basically a tabby coloration. We'll of course have to keep it, which means our cat census will stand at eight: Baci, Ralphy, Dipsy, Merlin, Sherbert, Princess, Toby, and the new kitten (Merlin, Sherbert and Princess are from Baci's previous litter two years ago.) Ralphy remains the Alpha cat of the household. My LIRR/NYCT blog | |

I hope your crib is kitten proof, since those little buggers will eventually knock over, eat, claw anything in its way [and those little claws are SHARP]. I went through this twice, with Danny in 1992, and Bart in 1996. Now they're both old pussies, but they are still spry for their age.

When I had this pregnant cat that "adopted" me back in May, she also got like that when it was almost time. She had the kittens finally in the backyard shed, which I left open for her (she wasn't my cat yet, so she didn't want to come in the house, she was more secure outside). Anyway, she was attacking anything that moved days before. (she LOVED humans, but any animal, had to watch out! She even attacked a neighbor's Labrador Retriever! They get crazy before they give birth. Then some other cat she had such a fight with it that I thought she'd induce labor on herself! It's funny, because now that she's no longer a mother, and the kittens are gone (except for the one I kept), she perhaps the mildest friendliest nicest cat I have ever had. (And now she sleeps with the neighbor dog, so they are friends!).

Before I had my dog fixed, the neighbor's dog jumped over the fence, and well, you know....we wound up with 2 puppies. I like dogs better than cats, but dogs are a lot more work. You can also leave overnight for a night or two without worrying about the cat, as long as you leave enough food and water. They basically take car of themselves. The same is not true for dogs. They need a lot more work.

I mentioned in another post that cats are way easier, and a lot less work. They basically take care of themselves. A dog needs a lot more attention and work. That's what I don't have a dog tight now at this point in my life. My life is way too busy for a dog, so a cat is a viable option. However, that doesn't mean I don't want to replace my old dog one day, as I really like dogs, just not right now, as it wouldn't be fair to the dog.

The cat thinks it's a dog. I let it out, it spends hours outside, but when I call it, it comes running like a dog. But you are right about most cats.

That cat sort of adopted me, and I would give it food in front of the building when I left in the morning. In the afternoon, when I came home, it would be mousing under the M train el. When it would see me, she would follow me home like a dog. She was a real NYC street cat. Then came the day that I was moving, the moving van pulls up, and there she was waiting for her food. Then, at the last minute, I decided I couldn't leave her there, as she had come to rely on me for food. So, at the last minute, I scooped her up and threw her in the car (which she was not happy about at the time). Well, she took very well to her new enviroment, and was sort of in heaven when she first moved out here. Before, she would spend her day mousing in the weeds under the M train el, now she had an entire forest to mouse in. She was a terror to the wildlife here, whe would even chase deer out of the yard! Every morning I'd find some dead ripped apart carcass on the front porch, at least when she was younger. or she would try and fish goldfish out of my fishpond (never suceeded at that though. My little NYC alley cat died though last year, she was pretty old.
