I used to have a cat that was a stray when I lived in Queens. That cat sort of adopted me, and I would give it food in front of the building when I left in the morning. In the afternoon, when I came home, it would be mousing under the M train el. When it would see me, she would follow me home like a dog.
She was a real NYC street cat.
Then came the day that I was moving, the moving van pulls up, and there she was waiting for her food. Then, at the last minute, I decided I couldn't leave her there, as she had come to rely on me for food. So, at the last minute, I scooped her up and threw her in the car (which she was not happy about at the time).
Well, she took very well to her new enviroment, and was sort of in heaven when she first moved out here. Before, she would spend her day mousing in the weeds under the M train el, now she had an entire forest to mouse in. She was a terror to the wildlife here, whe would even chase deer out of the yard! Every morning I'd find some dead ripped apart carcass on the front porch, at least when she was younger. or she would try and fish goldfish out of my fishpond (never suceeded at that though. My little NYC alley cat died though last year, she was pretty old.
