The only luck I see is the "luck" of submitting an application when they were (CTA) hiring. Other than that, getting the job, KEEPING the job, earning the respect of your co-workers and supervision, comes from a desire to better your (and family's)quality of life & an inbred sense or responsibility. After all that, the reward is a good pension & deceint medical care. That said, luck has very little, if anything to do with it. And in 2019, that goes for workers of any color or gender.

Those jobs fortunately out there for those who didn't spend thousands on a college education & spend a third of their working life income paying those loans off. Guys in the trades like welders, plumbers, carpenters etc are pulling down 6 figure salaries without that ball & chain of a student loan around their necks. Luck factors into the equation when it comes to getting a job site long term near home, and getting your union card early.
And its all equal opportunity, black, white, yellow, green, male, female, tranny, all have the opportunity to make the big bucks.
All the foreman cares about is you showing up sober & staying sober while on the clock , getting the job done...and not getting hurt.
Thats the basic bottom line. Luck is a player here, as with everything in life, but not as a deal maker or deal breaker.

Would you say that Lester Holt, as an African American, was "lucky" (as in right place, right time) to get the NBC nightly news gig after lilly white Brian Williams ruined his career by being stupid?
How was Holt, being Black, held back from career advancement?

Luck implies random chance. Working hard; showing up on time and not leaving early; offering to go the extra yard when needed...that's how you get yourself noticed so when a position opens up, you've increased the odds of being picked. That's not random chance; that's an example of making your own "luck."

I think that there is an element of luck and good timing along with the crystalization of a clearer vision for the future. In April 1980, my father in law died at age 79 while delivering milk on his route. That day, I decided to leave the family business and find a job that would afford me a decent retirement and be in a field that I would love. I pursued opportunities at several tailroad jobs and by November of that year, I chose the one that was most closely aligned with my interests and goals. Of course there was some luck involved too. I married a supportive wife and the governor signed legislation changing my Tier III pension to Tier IV but nice things happen to nice people.

Because the CTA hadn't hired for years and CMM was lucky that the only day in 10 years CTA was hiring, he happened to walk in...right?

You're grasping at straws. Oxford defines luck as, "success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions." CMM put in an application; he met the initial requirements and was interviewed; and then was hired.

"Luck" is my meeting my future wife when we were freshmen in college. It wasn't luck but hard work that got me into that college in the first place.
