I think that there is an element of luck and good timing along with the crystalization of a clearer vision for the future. In April 1980, my father in law died at age 79 while delivering milk on his route. That day, I decided to leave the family business and find a job that would afford me a decent retirement and be in a field that I would love. I pursued opportunities at several tailroad jobs and by November of that year, I chose the one that was most closely aligned with my interests and goals. Of course there was some luck involved too. I married a supportive wife and the governor signed legislation changing my Tier III pension to Tier IV but nice things happen to nice people. |
