It was established due to their understanding of the relationship between the Federal government and the states.Strictly speaking, YOU do not have the right to vote for president. it is not something guaranteed to you. It's a right of the states as bodies politic. Popular elections for president were not automatically instituted. Hell, in South Carolina, the electors were picked by the state legislature all the way to the Civil War. Even in New York, the privilege wasn't granted to the people until 1828. |

It's more a simple statistic. Blue states for the most part have higher populations than red states. So a 75/25 blue state has more conservatives than a 75/25 red state has liberals.As for why Republicans aren't screeching about the EC, it's because the very definition of conservative is to either not change things, or revert to the older versions of things. The EC is as old as it gets as far as US history is concerned, so there's no "more conservative" position to take. There's no reason to strategize, abolishing the EC would violate a core principle even if it would be beneficial. |
