Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sun Apr 14 17:26:01 2019 South Bend, IN Mayor Pete Buttigeig has officially announced his candidacy for President. The openly gay, married Democrat adds his name to an already crowded field of hopefuls, which includes Kamala Harris and Corey Booker.Should Buttigeig (say "Buddha Judge") be nominated and elected, he would become the first gay President, and that would be quite a rebuttal to Trump's Administration. However, that is an extreme long shot, given the bigger names already running. It's still an historical moment, though. |

Same could have been said about Carter in 1975 ("Jimmy Who For What"), and Obama. People want a fresh change, not 78 year old retreads, which is what Biden and Bernie are. He does have to be careful not to get into the Twitter pig pen with Trump and his juvenile behavior.Mayor Pete is (distant) 3rd in the polls, but trajectory is rapidly changing upward. He comes across as personable, brutally honest, serious, thoughtful, served in Afghanistan, and he is amazingly brilliant, attended Harvard and Oxford, and speaks 7 languages. It will be very hard to find anything negative about him except not agreeing with his economic and political views, and does not want to be a poster child like Ellen D. of the GLBQT community. I would not have thought this a month ago, but his being a gay married man won't much hinder him. The majority of the public in every state, except Alabama (where it does not matter for a Democrat) supports gay marriage. I like Swamwell and Klochubar too. |

Ideally, I'd love to see Trump debate Buttigeig, but as we saw in 2016... He'll show up at the event, but has no intention of actually debating anyone for the obvious reason.As you said Buttigeig (and any others) must stay conscious of Trump's ways and not let him drag them into his mudslinging where it's simply the juvenile name-calling and such. They need to stick to the issues and fully expect that Trump will do his usual thing of lying and so on. |

I agree that Buttigeig is a sharp, dynamic candidate, who can galvanize the Democratic party, like Obama did in 2008. He is young, telegenic, and possesses a solid grasp of realpolitik.Whether the country is truly ready for an openly gay candidate after electing an anti-LGBT figure like Trump, remains to be seen. Support for marriage equality isn't the same as supporting a gay man in the White House. Buttigeig is very astute I not portraying himself as only representing the gay community, but emphasizing his broad, mainstream appeal. That said, I do know he has it in his plans to be a very visible presence among the LGBTQ community anyway, as this is part of his appeal--as an underdog candidate, something he has in common with both Obama and Carter, which you correctly point out. I will have the chance to meet him in about six weeks, and hear for myself what he has to say on all the issues. Is he a Trump-slayer? We'll see what develops...but right now, he still has much work to do. |

With the transgender ban Trump just put into effect to suck up tot he Fundamentalists, those that are already there that are transgender are not thrown out, but brings on serious military morale issues as they are relegated to being inferior. That will backfire on Trump and help Buttigieg.Trump has created the current border crisis, cutting off aid to the northern Triangle counties, while retaining it for Venezuela, will intensify it, and make it worse, while he alienates the Latino voters in the southwest that Bush-43 got. Older white men are dying off; the rust belt is as bad off as ever; carrying on and on about coal will not lead to any job creation - Trump is very vulnerable in 2020. Turning the clock back to 1955 doesn't work. |

The last President who achieved that before him was Eisenhower.Obama also was the first President since the fall of the Soviet Union to sign a real arms control treaty with Russia, and he successfully hunted down and killed the most dangerous terrorist in modern history. On top of all that, he restored the auto industry, and started us on our way to Mars, and back to the Moon. That puts him in the top ten, with Lincoln, Washington, and FDR. |
