There is a permanent women's shelter on Broadway in Bed-Stuy near Gates on the J/Z.Also, the Armory on Park Ave has a temporary women's shelter in the basement. They cause lots of problems too. |

To me, if you were staying at a shelter, you are not homeless. In fact, if you follow their rules , you can stay at those places. I am specifically talking about the people that live in the street, be it under a highway overpass, in the subway, in the park, Etc. |

I agree with you that most of the visible homeless are mentally ill, addicted, or both. Those are the people living on the street, sleeping in boxes or tents that are unable to care for themselves. But if you add people couch surfing, people in shelters, RV’s etc then the statistics may change. In LA lots of those people actually have jobs. |

One hates to politicize the issue but you can't help seeing a relationship between Liberalism and homelessness. Just the othe day, Seattle was notified that the pharmaceutical company convention will not be held in that city because of the homelessness, drug addicts and aggressive pan handlers that proliferate the streets. |

Politically I know that LA politicians want to blame the large visible homeless population on greedy, wealthy people. Doing so absolves them of their failures in building a sufficient number of housing. It also ensures that the real problems won’t be addressed. These are people that can’t take care of themselves. Putting them in a home won’t solve that underlying issue. |

There's also taking on a roommate, but some landlords might prohibit it.Which is rather risky given that it requires a stranger to pay their portion of the rent on time to ensure that you remain housed. If they don't pay, you can boot them, but you're still liable for the entire rent. |

There are no magical $500 studio apartments, and $900/month is basically what you'd need to get an illegal apartment in some of the worst neighbourhoods of Nassau County. |
