New Starbucks policy will permit loitering in stores and use of restrooms, no purchase required

New Starbucks policy: No purchase needed to sit in its cafés

By Joe Pisani, AP Retail Writer
Nᴇᴡ Yᴏʀᴋ—May 19, 2018, 1:01 PM ET
Starbucks announced a new policy Saturday that allows anyone to sit in its cafés or use its restrooms, even if they don’t buy anything.

The new policy comes five weeks after two black men who hadn’t bought anything were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks.

Company executives have said its previous policies were loose and ambiguous, leaving decisions on whether people could sit in its stores or use the restroom up to store managers.

Starbucks said it has told workers to consider anyone who walks into its stores a customer, “regardless of whether they make a purchase.”

The company said anyone can use its cafés, patios or restrooms without buying anything, but it noted workers should still call the police if someone is a safety threat.

“We are committed to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome,” Starbucks said in a statement.

The two men who were arrested April 12 in Philadelphia were awaiting a third person for a meeting. One of them was denied use of a restroom because he hadn’t bought anything. A worker called police, and the men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, were arrested. They spent hours in jail before they were released.

The incident, video of which was posted on social media, was a major embarrassment for the coffee chain. Starbucks has long projected itself as a socially conscious company and promoted its stores as a neighborhood gathering place.

In response to the arrests, Starbucks plans to close more than 8,000 of its U.S. stores on the afternoon of May 29 for racial-bias training for its employees.

The men who were arrested settled with Starbucks earlier this month for an undisclosed sum and an offer of a free college education. They also reached a deal with Philadelphia for a symbolic $1 each and a promise from city officials to set up a $200,000 program for young entrepreneurs.

Starbucks is not "doomed" at all. In fact, I believe this policy will actually boost business, especially if the company has the presence of mind to expand their menu with a greater selection of tempting items.

I once got stuck in an airport coming home, because the equipment I was to fly on broke down at its origin. I did what most of my fellow passengers did while the airline tried to get another airplane out to us...I stuffed my face with overpriced airport food. People might come to Starbucks to hang out, but most of them will make purchases while they are there. Even if you plan to spend all day banging away on SubChat with your laptop, you will get hungry or thirsty. You'll buy something.

I do think that Starbucks will start charging for wi-fi, though.

Why? It's presumably part of their business model.

Surprising, yes, because it doesn't seem well designed to increase business. But they won't be the first company to ever enact an unwise business policy.

Starbucks in NYC already has an occupancy issue.

People make a purchase and then loiter for hours while on their computers making it hard to impossible for a customer who wants to sit and have a coffee for 10 minutes.

I gave up on Starbucks about 10 years ago.

yeah, depending on where you are, Starbucks might be a normal coffee experience or a frustrating one where you vow to never go to Starbucks again.

In some parts of the country they are building stand-alone with drive-thru, and very few people indoors. Mostly vehicle revenue.

Starbucks is now a fast food chain like Dunkin Donuts.

Having it as an unofficial policy made sense. Having it as an official policy will lead to abuse.

I wonder how they will handle smelly, mentally ill or drug addicted hanging out brining in lots of trash and not buying anything?

I have two Starbucks within a 90 second walk. Four within a 5 minute walk. All of those have outdoor seating and at least three of them have problems keeping the outdoor seating from becoming homeless hangouts. I wonder how this policy will play out. Maybe they will be the new drug dens. Like 7-eleven with comfortable seating.

my guess is some homeless will push the envelope and use the bathrooms.

In most of NYC, overcrowding is already severe and signs say "Restrooms for customers only" and I wonder if that will change?

Maybe customers will complain to corporate and threaten to buy coffee elsewhere?

Starbucks actually closed some restrooms in downtown LA to everyone, even customers, because the homeless issue had gotten so bad. They announced that they were reopening those restrooms a week or two ago.

Unless LA starts to deal with our homeless situation, it may make operating businesses like Starbucks impossible. So far LA has talked about the homeless issue, and we’ve passed a billion dollar bond, but nothing concrete so far.
