(AP) — A pit bull burst through a backyard fence, made its way into a nearby minivan and mauled two young children as they sat helplessly strapped into their car seats, police said. The mother of the 2-year-old girl and the 5-year-old boy managed to pry the animal off them Monday but not before it seriously mangled her son's face, witnesses said. Tom Grab told WPMT-TV that he was able to pull the 66-pound dog off the boy, but it wriggled free and continued the bloody assault. Several other people in the area also helped the mother, who drove to a nearby hospital after the dog was removed from the vehicle. She was treated for scratches, but her children are being treated for serious injuries. The mayhem ended when the owner of the 5-year-old pit bull terrier came out and secured the dog, authorities said. The dog's owner is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, and the dog is in quarantine. No charges have been filed, and the identities of those involved have not yet been released. The Lancaster police department did not immediately respond to requests for more details. Associated Press |

The problem is, that breed is easily corruptible, as are several others. Try training a Bassett Hound to do that - they'll fall asleep in the process.I'd be glad to see them made extinct. |

This is an extremely tragic incident and civil liability is almost a certainty. But if the dog had never attacked previously and the owner took reasonable steps to keep the dog contained, what would you charge him with?. Granted, the animal should be put down under these circumstances. |

He is always nice, always gentle...I can't understand it" etc. Its an owner thing inasmuch as "Yeah I know about Pit Bulls, but thats other folks dogs...not mine" Always hear that too. Its unrealistic to wish that Pit Bulls will go away. IMO owners should be required to carry heavy dog liability insurance & the dogs registered like they were weapons. |

Any breed of dog can be aggressive and dangerous.Are you saying any dog that is larger than a small child should be registered like a weapon? Border Collies are also very territorial, sometimes regard the backyard next door as their turf, but have never heard of them going though a fence and into jumping into a van, which they know is a human's territory. |

There's also the legal concept of something being inherently dangerous, wherein the defendant is strictly liable regardless of fault. So if courts find that pit bulls are inherently dangerous, their owners would be found liable for injuries caused by their dogs, automatically: the plaintiff would need only to prove that the dog caused the injury, the dog was owned by the defendant and that the Plaintiff was damaged.This is what some lay people in this thread appear to be advocating for pit bulls. In New York, dog owners are not responsible for injuries caused by dogs unless the owner knew or should have known the dog to have vicious propensities. |

I agree that a greater percentage of pit bulls injure people than German shepherds, but if the percentages are (just making up hypothetical numbers here) 0.8% and 0.3%, where do you draw the line? How do you even get good statistics to make the law. And what about mixed breeds? |
