Once again, I never heard of the movie that won Best Picture

What ever happened to popular movies winning Oscars?

I say the following, not knowing the results of any of last night's awards.

Popularity no longer seems to be a criteria for best picture. To be pest picture, the film has to have a back story that plays to a liberal narrative. An actor with a compelling story or a film that has a strong leftist message. Of course this might not apply in the face of an epic such as "The Godfather". So far the only meme I've seen is about a Muslim actor and what a perfect acceptance speech he made. Could it have been any other way? Liberals are so predictable.

Hollywood has been self-referential for a long time. Look at all the movies that have been made about making movies. Or about what directors are feeling. They're all self-aggrandizing even when they seem critical of their subject like 8-1/2.

The box office tells what the most popular movies are, but movie people are so impressed with themselves that they think they are artists judging art.

The Big Mac shouldn't win a culinary award just for being popular, and a movie shouldn't get a prestigious film industry award just for being popular.

Quality matters.

This year, it seems that the Academy really did their penance for being so, "Racist".

That really doesn't answer my question. Assuming that your point is valid, why is it then, that the movies of high quality are no longer popular?

Historically, very high quality movies have rarely been blockbusters.

That is correct. While Smaz has a point too, to add it has to have quality attributes that appeal to the LEFT.

These days many of the movies that win best picture are made with the intent to win these awards. Then the producers and directors lobby the voters to win. It's all political (don't mean democrat republican political). These movies aren't truly reflect want the ppl want to see which is why i don't watch these awards.

Most popular movies (just like most popular restaurants) are not worthy of critical acclaim.

Put it this way.... If no "black" movies had been made in the last year, the Academy would have been so desperate that some World Star brawl would have won Best Picture!

You SHOULD be laughing hysterically since according to your criteria, these should have been the movies nominated for an Oscar.

It's like have the nominees for best food of 2016 being

The Big Mac
KFC's Extra Crispy Tenderss
Chipotle's Barbacoa

IAWTP. Generally, the movies that win Best Picture are not hugely popular. How many people have seen the movie which beat out "Raiders of the Lost Ark"?

It's true, in a way, that they do it with the intent to win the Oscars. To put a less cynical spin to it, it's a way to push for stronger performances, deeper writing, better directing, etc.; in other words, the more artistic end of the spectrum. Other artistic media do similar things.

It seems that they've already been made. You're not alone with that question. The TV ratings came in & they are down between 5 & 9% (based on time spent watching & location) from last year. Simple put, if movies were more "popular" the'd be more Mr & Mrs. Joe Six-pack watching to keep the sponsors interested . With the ratings down, I'm sure Madison Ave. is watching...and maybe re-thinking.

TV ratings have been down since the advent of the Internet and especially since the wide availability of cheap streaming options.

This is very true. But having a seemingly consistant slew of ho-hum movies year in & year out can't help maintain an audience, either on network tv or streamed. Why would anyone want to sit thru a 4+ hour award show showcasing mediocore movies & performances? Last nights best picture clusterfuck was the highlight of evening. That part of the show made the biggest next day headlines, not who won what. Thats got to say something right there.

Exactly. In the olden times, I would probably watch the Oscars instead of whatever bullshit was on CBS, NBC or FOX. But now there are many more options, even if I still choose to watch TV.

That's why the Oscars ratings heyday was in the 70's when there was nothing else on.

Because the popular box office choice is comic book heroes and cartoons, which may or may not be great cinema, while a good film noir detective story will languish at the box office but could be the greatest film ever. The people who vote on these films aren't using box office receipts as criteria.

Back in the day, most films that won were also the most popular because people went to the movies more.

If you do not run out this week and see "moonlight", and love it, and then run out to Target or Best Buy and buy 2 copies of the DVD, then you may be a racist homophobic conservative, Hitler loving, fascist.
