L.E.D. Bulbs

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Sep 29 06:34:20 2016

Just bought a four pack of Eco-Smart 8.5w (60W equiv.) warm white bulbs at Home Depot for $8.97 plus tax.

That's about $2.24 per bulb.

They are really coming down in price.

You'd be insane to buy any CFL's, if they're still around.

I watch for sales in Shoprite, between which they can be expensive.
Wegamn's has them cheap. Home Depot prices float around.

We just redid all the lights in the house to LEDs. Love how you get full light when you throw the switch, it's so nostalgic. Waiting to see what impact this has on the ol' electric bill.

2700 soft white is awfully close to the classic incandescent color. They are actually very nice. Also seeing designer options, like LED bulb replicas of classics like Edison bulbs and party lights. Even scored buglights for the doorways.

fiogf49gjkf0d
Don't have an exact amount, plus this was done somewhat haphazadly at first, replacing burned out bulbs as they blew, with a final push last two months. They ran under ten dollars each, excluding the 3way. So for under two hundred dollars I probably won't have to replace a lightbulb for the rest of my life. They have outstanding lifespans.

Another issue is enclosed fixtures. They require special bulbs with additional heatsinking. They do run a few dollars more. If you use the regular bulbs in an enclosed fixture they will not last.

No buzz whatsoever. And many, seemed like most that I saw at Home Depot and Lowes, are dimmable, read the package carefully to be certain.

Some are dimmable, others are not. You have to read what it says on the package.

I also bought a couple of 6w ones for night light and they give off as much light as 40 watts regular. Good for lighting up the stairs in the evening or for a timer light when you want to light up a room in your house. 20 years ago, I'd burn through a 75 or 100w light bulb in a year for that.

Just went out and back to Home Depot. I like the Phillips ones the best. Some have flat profile. They have a 9.5w/60w equivalent/800 lumens on sale for $1.97, which is $5 off the usual price.

I would stay away from Cree. They have a vented top, get very hot, and threw out the one I had as I do not like light bulbs that generate a lot of heat. Do not every put them in a glass-enclosed ceiling fixture with no ventilation.

I think Quart Haolgen ought to be outlawed for that reason. 12 units of a 16 unit condo building burned down in my complex with 1 fatality due to a Q-H bulb coming in contact with some drapes.

If you want CFL, don't buy the cheap junk ones from a dollar store like Trisonic brand.

What subsidies are these? I can find just one DOE program which spent $10 million to develop an LED bulb, and another one which provided $10 million in rebates for upgrading to LEDs. That's less than what we spent on Iraq and Afghanistan in 3 hours so we can definitely afford that bill if we can afford those wars.

On the other hand the Chinese have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in LED manufacturing. Really we're taking advantage of the Chinese government's subsidies by buying cheaper LEDs here in the US.

On Long Island, PSEGLI/LIPA does in-store rebates at the register on some L.E.D. bulbs. With those rebates, I changed 8 PAR90 outdoor flood light bulbs, cost me about $45 instead of $100. I also changed light bulbs throughout the house to L.E.D., and gave away the CFL bulbs, some being the more expensive dimmable type which they needed.
