I definitely do.

However, I'd like politicians and economists to think more about how to make trade freer while also helping to reduce the bad side effects.

Shiite, yeah! Trade is good, so long as its fair. We need TPP, so long as we can tweak it should we need to. Same with NAFTA.

In addition, we need a punishing and onerous tax scheme that robs corporations of profitability in closing domestic manufacturing and shippng those jobs out of the country. That's something no republican has thought of.

At the same time, we seriously need to improve our infrastructure, from roads and bridges to inernet connectivity so the jobs of the future can be done anywhere, and providing support so manufacturing can flourish.....supply lines that can functionas reliably as they do in the Chinese manufacturing centers. Without answering modern manyfacturings needs, we deserve closed fcatories. Get with it.

What do you mean by "free trade agreements"?

Here's an interesting quotation.

(I)n general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.
Now that was not written by any US politician. Guess who it was?

Canada

I suspect the Canadians would like the idea, but they're fearful of US guns trickling across the border.

and the Carribean

If that happened, you'd see the black population of the US increase by roughly 12 million people as every island would empty itself if visa free travel was permitted. Even the beggars would find a way to pay for one way tickets.

The canadians (and Americans for that matter) would have access to the Caribbean as well - the visa free movement would (hopefully!) allow the less affluent regions an opportunity for investment. Something like "French Canadians, retire to Haiti! New roads, condos and hospitals going up now!"

Pre-Bush, I usually breezed through but twice I was detained for a few minutes. Post-Bush, no different.

Pre-Bush, my sister's mother-in-law, a naturalized Canadian citizen who had entered the US hundreds of times, was denied entry because of insufficient proof of citizenship.

It was pretty random already pre-Bush.

On #2, we diaagree. Yet the practice cntinues. Only stopping them through taxation would do it. Think of this...that money could provide free education retraining and a stipend for living through that readjustment time at little or no further expense to the people as a whole. That should be the price for abbrogating the responsibility one takes on when employing others. The sense of responsibility has long been gone from the workplace.

It has everything to do with it being demanded. This is NOT that serious a place. Aside from the trump nuclear war thing, which is as serious as it gets (and anyone that was alive during the Cuban Missile crisis can attest to how serious....NYC was in absolute panic then) there is little serious and lot of exaggeration here.

The practice shouldn't be encouraged by loopholes in the tax code, though. If a country does billions in business in the US, it should be taxed by the US (not punitively), even if its headquarters are in Ireland.

Yes it does. One of the biggest problems this nation has is lack of infrastructure. Look back at WW2. even with a massive, and at the time expanding thanks to lend-lease, manufacturing base we had a difficult time producing all that was needed to fight that war.

Now we buy tanks from the freekin Chinese. What will happen if, let's say, a presdient trump starts military action (in the conventional sense) against them. We'll need tanks. We won't be able to buy them. Get it?

Even though it's private sector, and there isn't anything wrong with that, we need a robust manufacturing base HERE because we just may need those assembly lines to crank out materiel some day. It's happened before.

It's far easier to retool an existing plant for another related purpose than it is to build from scratch. And much faster.

That should be the price for abbrogating the responsibility one takes on when employing others.

Businesses are not in loco parentis over their employees.

Other than following the law, their only responsibility is towards their shareholders.

I would at most support the elimination of existing tax incentives for companies who outsource a substantial part of their workforce overseas since that's just perverse.

IAWTP.

Although I would add that "following the law" could imply that there should be new laws that they'd have to abide by.

I would say that the only laws regulating business, besides appropriate taxes, should be those that ensure the safety of workers and that prevent businesses from engaging in outright harm and exploitation of other people.*

The US buying Chinese tanks sounds like bullshit.

The Army actually complains that Congress makes them buy more Abrams tanks than they need. If they have more American-made tanks than they need, why the fuck are they importing tanks?

Assuming, arguendo, that the United States defense industry is incapable of meeting the United States' defense needs: The government proposes contracts that have mandatory American manufacture clauses and there are no companies capable of bidding, then the federal government can simply build and subsidize the appropriate factories outright. Even that is unlikely, as if it were really that hard to find a qualified contractor, the price of the proposal would go up until investors are willing to make the appropriate investments. Proposed weapons and related systems are planned YEARS in advance.

If Congress wouldn't want to invest in defense to such an extent, then well, what's the problem? The people would have spoken.
