I don't know if the operator of the diner is the owner of the property. But I feel that the $15/hr min wage will cause more small restaurants to close. Like I said paying someone $31200/year to hand out pastries or pizza slices is not going to cause more places to close up for good. |

The whole point of a bunch of posters here, and supposedly the diner owner, is that it's the rise in the minimum wage that is killing this diner.Everything you and everyone else has posted is directly contradicting that original hypothesis. They exist to provide inexpensive labor where costlier labor would be unnecessary. They exist so people can learn skills that will enable employees to understand and thrive in the workforce. In the fast food industry, each minimum wage employee accounts for about $3000 of profit each year. The industry estimates that $15/hr will result in a $3000 per employee loss per year. |

Diners are alive and well here in NJ and are popular as ever, or at least they seem to be. In many cases, diners have evolved to become more "bistro" like, offering a more diverse menu and liquor licenses, as well as swanky decor, but they are still diners at heart. And they are patronized by people of all ages.Off the top of my head, I can name the Suburban Diner in Paramus; Candlewyck Diner in East Rutherford; and the Nevada Diner in Bloomfield that have been remodeled and expanded, offering outdoor seating and an upgraded menu. In addition, the Chit Chat Diner in Hackensack replaced the Triboro Diner; and the State Street Grill in Bloomfield replaced Willie's Diner (that was several years ago). I also heard from a waitress at the River Edge Diner that that one will also be undergoing a refurbishment in the near future. Oh, and then there's the Gotham City Diner and Subway Station in Fair Lawn... (transit-related decor, and lots of it). |

I'm going by the more classic diners out on the various old interstates that are now bypassed by superhighways and all sorts of fast food joints. Prior to those too, you often had to wait for a seat. Now most of the joints I'm talking about are half empty at best. |

Didn't say you did. However, the "service economy" created over the past 40 years shipped many of those better jobs overseas. Check out who's working in many of these places. You'll find 30 and 40 year olds. A bachelor's degree these days is worth about as much as a high school dropout 30 years ago. And those higher paid union jobs are largely gone. About the only way to make a real living these days is in the trades, and few are motivated to go there owing to the "college stigma".And so, many people actually DO depend on these former "entry level" jobs because for too many, that's as good as it gets. Now while I'll agree with you on the rest, maybe we should just put these folks on the dole instead of paying them a living wage. But somehow I suspect that won't be acceptable either. :) |

All I'm saying is that those jobs were meant for high school and college kidsThose jobs exist so that the companies can return profits to shareholders. Just like any other job. Private enterprise doesn't create charity jobs meant for certain groups just for the hell of it. When they can't fill them, wages rise. That's the classic style. :)The Del Rio and other others that were brought up in this post are more like diner-restaurants. They're much larger in capacity, have more complex menus and are generally Greek owned. The classic diners are a dying breed in some locations, but some are being trucked out of state to reopen and serve eggs over easy and coffee etc. if I'm correct, the Cheyenne Diner in NYC was trucked out of state and lives again. Here's an interesting read. Bill Newkirk |
