Israelis are required to carry photo ID with them at all times by law and are provided by the government to every citizen free of charge. US citizens are not required to carry ID at all times, and the IDs are not provided free of charge. Therefore, requiring photo ID to vote amounts to a poll tax, and that is unconstitutional. |

When elections are being decided by razor thin margins, having the 5 or 10 percent of the population without IDs being unable to vote is significant.But equally, when elections are being decided by razor thin margins, having that sort of percentage of partisan hacks indulging in personation, plural voting, absentee ballot abuse, casting votes on behalf of the dead or those who have moved away, fraudulent registrations of those who are ineligible to vote, and other forms of voter intimidation and fraud is significant. In Britain, where there is less sensitivity about the state holding data about people, but more historic laxness in voter ID rules, a similar thing has recently been achieved by a move to Individual Electoral Registration (IER). The first stage was to match the existing register with National Insurance (i.e. Social Security) Numbers – a reasonably good indicator of who is entitled to apply for ID – and the result was that in some urban areas over 20% of voters were removed from the register. Of course, the modern-day Boss Tweed wannabes are squealing, and the effect of more effective checking of who voters are is that left-wing parties overall suffer (which suggests that their operatives have been more willing to let the ends justify the means in the past). |

You need a birth certificate with a raised seal to get US passport. The only free one you get is given to your mother. There's a charge for copies. Then there's the roughly $100 for the passport. And ypu still have to travel to a postal hub.....most post offices do not swear passports.Most Americans don't have one. This is why. |

For it to be meaningfully studyable, people have to get caught. Professional Tammany-Hall-style fraudsters don't tend to get caught. They just lobby hard against anything that would make their lives harder. It's extremely suspicious how much Democrats play "don't look there" on this issue. In Britain, it went from there allegedly being no problem (except in Northern Ireland, where things have always been more charged) straight to the local Labour Party in Britain's largest local government district getting caught manipulating absentee ballots in a warehouse. |

No real environmentalist opposes nuclear power.There are many problems with nuclear power. They don't involve nuclear power in principle, but they do involve nuclear power as it has been implemented over the last 50 years. - Uranium mines that create vast amounts of pollution. I wouldn't drink well water from large portions of the American Southwest if I were you. - Extensive fish kills from sending excessively warm water back into the water source. - Careless implementation that allows releases of radioactivity from the power plant, as in TMI, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. - A general attitude of "It's impossible for anything to go wrong" as opposed to actual planning on how to deal with things that could go wrong. All of these can be addressed and have been addressed to a greater or lesser degree. Much of the reaction is to past abuses. One intrinsic non-environmental problem is that when you address all of these items properly, nuclear power isn't cheap any more. |
