No real environmentalist opposes nuclear power.

There are many problems with nuclear power. They don't involve nuclear power in principle, but they do involve nuclear power as it has been implemented over the last 50 years.

- Uranium mines that create vast amounts of pollution. I wouldn't drink well water from large portions of the American Southwest if I were you.

- Extensive fish kills from sending excessively warm water back into the water source.

- Careless implementation that allows releases of radioactivity from the power plant, as in TMI, Chernobyl, and Fukushima.

- A general attitude of "It's impossible for anything to go wrong" as opposed to actual planning on how to deal with things that could go wrong.

All of these can be addressed and have been addressed to a greater or lesser degree. Much of the reaction is to past abuses.

One intrinsic non-environmental problem is that when you address all of these items properly, nuclear power isn't cheap any more.
