Posted by salaamallah@hotmail.com on Sat Jun 10 01:28:00 2006 battery powered open reel recorders !!no camcorders no vhs units back then but reel to reel and 45 records 33/1/3 records most mono then stereo hi - fi era... i know i am getting old when i remember seeing them being sold the small portable hand held tiny reel to reel audio recorder ! dirt cheap ( this was before the compact analog audio cassette ) i remember seeing them sold in drug stores general markets radio shack lafayette radio electronics olson electronics stores they did not sound as good as the 7'' and 10'' 1/4 hi fi models some of them were called ''sound cameras'' and you had to plug in a moving coil MIC ( some of them had on off switches ) 3' 2' reels usually powered by either aa c or d bateries music some recording kinda sounded ok .....then in the 70s the audio cassette was a much better improvement until the walkman came in ..... then yopu have a radio and an audio cassette but thats later i strill remember seeing those small reels going round and round !! maybe you had one of those small units way back in the 1960s eh ? i target about 1965 when you could get one of these units !! peak |

Lot nicer than my no-name junker. Heh. But it was cool the way the motor flipped one way or the other and drove the rubber on the hubs there. And no, my junker died many many years ago. Motors never lasted on them and eventually, since there was a permanent magnet erase head and no "bias" the head would get magnetized and they'd just get more and more distorted with time. True garbage they was!So no ... just a handy pic to show that I remember the junkers. Still have my SONY PRE-EIAJ open reel half inch video machine with SONY B&W camera though. (grin) Dates back to somewhere around 1973'ish ... |

I had a Craig reel-to-reel, possibly a Craig 212. It ran on batteries or a/c power. It had two recording speeds - 3.75 ips and either 7.5 ips or 1.875 ips, I forget which. I think you changed speeds by removing a sleeve thing on the capstan and then screwing it into a holder on the unit. If you lost the sleeve you had a one-speed recorder.Does anyone make reel-to-reel today? As late as 1981 places like J&R sold Technics and Revox reel-to-reel recorders. |

They were sold at Lafayette where I worked in the late 60's. 3" reels and a joystick style controller that worked the rewind, fast forward and play. The Lafayette RK-137 and RK-142 had the same style joystick. If the 212 had two speeds, I doubt that 7 1/2 ips would be the second speed. That's too fast, tape would be used up too soon. Craig Corporation.Located in Los Angeles, California and originally founded in the 30's as Craig - Panorama by Robert Craig to distribute photographic products, in 1952 his son, the economist T. Robert Craig Jr., took over as chairman of the company and quickly transformed the business into an importer and distributor of Brown Goods, although in the late fifties and 60's the company did some of their own design, quality control and final assembly but this was mainly to get around the very stringent USA import tax regulations at the time and by 1972 the company had ceased all local assembly. In 1963 the company changed from a California registered company into the Delaware registered Craig Corp. Although the company traded in all kinds of CE products ranging from alarm clocks through calculators (very high tech at the time) the company's became best know in the 60's for their tape recorder products that they sourced from Sanyo, Pioneer and others, initially these were mostly Reel to Reel but the company expanded into the 8 Track Cartridge market in the latter half of the decade and met with spectacular success in the then emerging car audio market, the end result being that in last 2 decades of the company's life it was mostly known as a provider of car audio products and novelty high tech electronics. The company had for a time very close ties to Pioneer and when Pioneer USA was set up in 1972 a number of top Craig employees left to work for that company. The company's assets including the brandname were sold to Bercor in 1985 but the company itself existed for at least a few years more since it was in litigation with it USA tax authorities as late as 1987 |

The model is 212. It can be operated off a 9vdc wall wart or 6 C size batteries. This recorder uses 3" reels.

I am sitting here looking at a Craig 2108, 7 transistor, 6 C size battery powered tape recorder.On the front it is identified as a Super 212 with auto-level recording. I haven't tried to use it in quite awhile so I don't know if it still works. |

I also had a Craig under-the-dash FM-stereo/Cassette player back in 1977. It had thumbwheel tuning. I hooked it up to two Jensen speakers in my 1969 Olds Cutlass-S. The unit was installed on this slider thing so I could remove it. In Brooklyn we didn't have a garage and thieves would steal a cheap stereo out of an old car back then. |

That was their first store. When they expanded again, they opened their Syosset location as the main store and mail order source. In the late 60's they opened their Hauppauge warehouse (no store) which dealt with Lafayette private line products (audio, CB, etc). Then sometime around 1977 they went belly up. "let me see muy pair are called criterion 100 A ........"Are you sure the Criterion 100A's have 8" woofers ? I always knew them to have 10" woofers. The Criterion 25/25A and 50/50A have 8" woofers. The Criterion 25/25A's were cube shaped bookshelf speakers. And the Criterion 50/50A were rectangular shaped speakers. Now the Criterion 3X/3XA and 5X had 12" woofers. One of the last 1/4 inch reel-to-reel offered by Lafayette Radio recorded B/W video got you about fifteen minutes but who had a need?The first Sony BetaMax with an internal TV tuner changed everything. www.earlytelevision.org/ Technicolor had this system we called the 'fishbowl'....motion picture film cassettes spot scanned into video. Then there was RCA 'Selectevision'....basically a 33rpm record with seven times the tracks...heavy skipper. NAB cassettes were pre-BetaMax but nobody was interested when you could get TV for free off-the-air. Why would anyone want a XEROX machine when you had carbon paper? |

When Lafayette collapsed, I got 150 WDC per channel receiver, turntable, two Criterion 150As that 'Pink Floyd' ripped voice coils off cone, ten xtal scanners and four two meter 25 watt xtal FM transcievers. I still have one HA-146 left but quartz crystals are hard to by today and it lacks the tone encoder I need.'Transistorized' equipment is easy to troubleshoot down to discreet components. I not only have a Atlas 215X fully operational HF, a circa-1974 Yaesu-Musen (put Hallicrafters out of business) FT101B transceiver with FL-2100B (nice kilowatt AM equivalent with Shure reluctance microphones) but TWO Zenith ALL-TRANSISTOR TRANS-OCEANIC ROYAL 1000Ds...'The Worlds Most Magnificent Radio.' Tube-free. Do you rmember HAMMARLUND of Brooklyn? |

My uncle had a battery-powered Telefunken open reel mono tape recorder. It could accommodate 5" reels. The motor still works, but it longer records or plays back. The control buttons are marked in German and English. |
