" had a Craig reel-to-reel, possibly a Craig 212."

I remember the Craig 212. They were sold at Lafayette where I worked in the late 60's. 3" reels and a joystick style controller that worked the rewind, fast forward and play. The Lafayette RK-137 and RK-142 had the same style joystick.

If the 212 had two speeds, I doubt that 7 1/2 ips would be the second speed. That's too fast, tape would be used up too soon.
