If you insist on making something out of this thread, here's one of his quotes:

"I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. His successor will pick up the shards of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so often in human history."

Until your post, I had never heard of Francis Cardinal George, nor of the office that he's held.*

And in any event, do you even know what condolences are? To whom should I be giving these condolences? To you? So again I ask, was Cardinal George a friend or relative of yours? Why are you grief-stricken at his death? Should I troll the death records of the Cook County Clerk (or equivalent officer) and then express my condolences to you for all the people living in Chicago who have recently died, lest you consider me classless for failing to condole with you for the death of random people neither of us have ever heard of?

*I've never read or seen anything directly related to the office of Archbishop of Chicago and have never had reason to think of the Catholic hierarchy in or near Chicago, so I can't say as I was ever aware of the Archbishop of Chicago even though its existence is largely self-evident.

But a diocese is a region. I find it quirky that the church names its regions after the municipalities in which the headquarters are located, even when the municipality is very small. Diocese of Albany makes good sense for "the church region that encompasses the area around Albany." Even "Diocese of Salt Lake City" makes good sense to describe all of Utah (though the Episcopal diocese is called "Utah"). Diocese of Rockville Center just sounds silly to me.

Yes, but where was the Constitution in the interim?

Unless Archbishop Cupich goes completely off the rails in some totally unexpected manner, it seems highly improbable that he will die in prison. To suggest that he might strikes me as a very paranoid thing to say. It's in Ted Cruz land, or even further out. It's like saying Obama won't step down in 2017.

I agree, but why would I assume that dioceses would be named after regions unless I encountered one? In any event, I wouldn't even assume that there is a single diocese covering Nassau and Suffolk Counties. I might assume that it is part of the Archdiocese of New York, or the Diocese of Brooklyn, if I were to be aware of the existence of the latter.

Note that previously it was part of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
