Why is it that you never see a black person being the goofy one on tv commercials?

Posted by ntrainride on Tue Jan 27 23:48:03 2015

fiogf49gjkf0d
seriously. it's always a white guy being portrayed as goofy, needing to be schooled by the more common sense black guy.I dare one ad agency to show the opposite scenario: an obviously stupid black dude being humorously shown the error of his ways by the calm wiser white guy. but we will never see this. whitey, apparently, is the only folk who are goofy, ignorant or just plain stupid.

There is a very popular GEICO commercial with a black ex football player ordering cold cuts and acting kind of goofy.

What I notice about commercials is that there are blacks in most commercials even though they're like 14% of population, you'd think they were like 50%. Clearly there is an agenda to promote blacks through commercials.

and you never see groups of only white people. always has to be a non-white person in the crew. yet it's perfectly fine to have all-black or all-hispanic gatherings, without a token white person in the background. yeah, this is very minor in the grand scheme of things. but it's damn irksome anyway. what is the subtle message here? white folks shouldn't feel comfortable being in all-white groups?

it's the age of obama.

started before he came along.

why do you think Vin Diesel and The Rock are such big movie stars? They are examples of the attitude in America.

But you're right in that they are promoting diversity in many commercials. We should revisit this thread on Sunday during the Superbowl.

Dan Lawrence will be posting on Sunday for sure.

Actually, in Spike's lecture, it was the "SUPER DUPER Magical Negro."

But he came back to blast Rush numerous times after that for not even getting what he said correctly. I was kinda going after that part. Ah well, I guess the reference just zooms over tardchat. Nevermind. :)

what? my question is valid. black guys can be just as goofy as white guys. but the pussys who make commercials dont have the balls to show black folk being as normal as white folk...wherupon being "normal" means being goofy sometimes. i think the problem is, all these guilty upper class white folk who didnt grow up with black people and are the ones making the commercials. i did grow up with black people so they're no mystery to me. i've know smart black people , stupid black people, honest black people, lying black people, brave black people, cowardly black people, loving black people, hateful black people. see what i'm saying? just like white folks...so why shouldn't blacks be shown as being the same as whites? it's those white people who didnt grow up with black people who make those unrealistic commercials. and based on your comment, you're either a black person or just another guilty cracker...probably actually afraid of blacks.

Not always.

I think we're starting to mature from the era where black people in commercials were "racial representatives" and had to be always carefully handled.

Commercials have been slowly changing to portray black people as "just people." I just saw a La Quinta commercial in which a black person sitting at a board meeting was labeled as a "Yes Man" (the white before him was a "Brown Noser") and only one person, a white man was the "Boss."

Still, certain portrayals are still taboo: such as portrayal of burglars in security commercials as anything other than white.

And you have commercials showing black families where the black dad is portrayed as foolish while mom or the kids are smart and clever.

This last, of course, the silly dad and the wise wife, is a cultural constant that hasn't changed much. we've had Ralph and Alice, Kingfish and Safire, and I'm sure you can think of many more.

They've also learned to be careful about kids lecturing parents. The advertisers thought they were portraying "modern and up-to-date" vs. "old-fashioned"; instead they were alienating their older consumers as they saw "your kids are smarter than you, OLD MAN."
