When the draft ended I was just a few months away from turning 18. When I was still 17 I talked about it with my folks and decided to enlist in the Air Force (where my dad served) if I had a low number. My folks agreed. And then the draft ended and it became a moot point. |

We had no choice if our number was up. Mine was 17. Fortunately for me, had a girlfriend down in Asbury Park at the time, and knew the post commander at Monmouth who told me as soon as I got the paperwork to let him know and he'd pull me into the signal corps and guaranteed not to go over there. Germany perhaps, but not Nam. So had I gone, not facing combat, I would still feel the same way that I do.As it turns out, my pops was dying of cancer, so got a 1Y until he died whereupon I became 1A again and never got the invite. Had to sit in 1A status until I was 35 though. So I ended up serving as a civilian for Loral for a while there. |

All of the survivors that I talked to when I was a kid sincerely believed that they were going to be put on a train and dumped off over the border without their possessions. I'm not sure it was stated publicly enough and early enough that the average conscript would have known. Say what you want about America's involvement in Vietnam, genocide of the North Vietnamese was not our goal. No, but killing Vietnamese people was a necessary aspect of the endeavour, and the stated goal was hardly sufficient to justify it. Personally, I don't see much fundamental difference between mass murder in the name of genocide and mass murder in the name of any other dumb goal. The question remains, do you believe everyone has an obligation to murder people if their country tells them to? If so, are there exceptions to this obligation? If so, do these exceptions apply universally, or does "America is special" count among them? |

And probably unbeknownst to those who weren't there, soldiers faced exactly the same problem that Israel faces with Palestinians walking up to soldiers and shooting them, stabbing them, and in many cases blowing themselves up along with the soldiers with body bombs. Ever wonder where Palestinians GOT that idea from?Bottom line, a LOT of civilians got shot just because they were there and jumpy troops didn't want to wait to see if they were friend or foe after enough of their own buddies got blowed up. That uncertainty over there resulted in a LOT of troops coming back mental cases between that and children getting killed by randomly dropped bombs. Napalm, Agent Orange and other chemical warfare by our own also took its toll on our own. Then there was living with this on a daily basis:
