We had no choice if our number was up. Mine was 17. Fortunately for me, had a girlfriend down in Asbury Park at the time, and knew the post commander at Monmouth who told me as soon as I got the paperwork to let him know and he'd pull me into the signal corps and guaranteed not to go over there. Germany perhaps, but not Nam. So had I gone, not facing combat, I would still feel the same way that I do.As it turns out, my pops was dying of cancer, so got a 1Y until he died whereupon I became 1A again and never got the invite. Had to sit in 1A status until I was 35 though. So I ended up serving as a civilian for Loral for a while there. |
