XPrivacy |
|
Posted by Nilet on Fri Oct 24 05:04:02 2014 Selkirk, have you ever heard of the XPrivacy app? It purports to be an Android app that will feed blank or false data to apps which demand excessive permissions (so that flashlight app can report to its master that you're on Christmas Island and all of your contacts are cartoon characters).Of course, it requires root access to make this work, but XDA seems to think it's legit. Let me guess, iOS has this feature by default and KNOS doesn't need it because no apps can demand excessive permissions anyway? :) |

Tizen and Ubuntu phones are dead and Android is becoming less friendly so this is the perfect time for the Selkirk Special™ phone to be released now with super-secure KNOS!Or did Apple make you sign a noncompete agreement? :( |

So you want your apps to be free but you don't want to give up anything in exchange?! Same goes for apps you pay for. Why not simply NOT install the apps that demand too many permissions?????? |

So you want your apps to be free but you don't want to give up anything in exchange?!I said that where? Oh right, Errapin Stati just made it up. That's another lie. Maybe I should be making a list. Same goes for apps you pay for. Well if I pay for it, aren't I giving up money in exchange? Why not simply NOT install the apps that demand too many permissions?????? Because I want to use them? Honestly, that's like responding to someone asking about security software by saying: "Why not simply NOT use the internet?" With superfluous question marks, of course. |

Vaguely remember hearing some PR about it the other day on a security forum after they kinda overplayed their hand. I don't do Android as I never much cared for their idea of security, and google (who does the OS) isn't exactly the first thought I'd have as to privacy protection. That said, their PR thing didn't show anything particularly threatening about all except for one of the apps mentioned. However there have been numerous OTHER alleged "flashlight apps" that have turned out to be banking trojans, password stealers and worse. There's even botnets now which eat up your cellular data minutes so that ISIS can surf porn on your dime. :) iOS has a flashlight app built into the OS so that there's no need for something that needs to manipulate the hardware flashlight, that's why they did it as this was a serious issue years ago. And in KNOS, we call the flashlight app your display. You're welcome to crank up the brightness all you want. Heh. In all seriousness though, any app that can detect and alert on excess and inappropriate system permissions itself is quite useful. But any such app would ALSO require system permissions to do that as well, so the question would be do you trust THESE guys? |

Actually they did, so I had to step away from KNOS and leave it in bingbong's hands plus my old posse. We HAVE looked into it though, and each manufacturer runs entirely different hardware inside. The phone side of the equation is an entirely separate system. So although this CAN be done (BSD has ARM code available) it would be a logistical nightmare unless a manufacturer was willing to build enough units to make a KNOS build worth the development investment. |

I'll be sure to launch a kickstarter to build a KNOSphone. |

It's gonna have to be a bigger amount than they usually do. 4-1/2 million already in KNOS for peecees of up front costs, I figure making ARM chips work will be roughly similar. There are also some new 8A's out that code will need to be written for from scratch. |
