Didn't apply to private property. Lots of people there bought homes and their kids inherited them. It was one of the few things one could own of intrinsic value. Collectivism did exist alongside, but worked as well as US "housing projects" and was dissolving by the 1950s. (that is in terms of housing, NOT any property dedicated to productive output, such as factories and farms, they remained state controlled) |

LIke I said, there were always privately owned homes in the USSR. Land used for farming was confiscated in 1918. However, beginning to end, one could own their own dacha. By the 1970s one could own an apartment building and be a landlord, albeit with strict regulation. Rent control wasn't much different. You could by a lot, purchase cement and limber and build a home. They never really messed much with private ownership of real estate. Don't confuse that with property dedicated to economic output. Read the link in the first post I did on this. |

Why are you surprised?I remember a conversation with an Aeoflot pilot. He owned two 5 unit buildings (apparently there was a maximum number of building units qualified for private ownership) in Moscow, "one each for my kids". He knew the value of owning them even though he couldn't make money on them (he could meet all expenses, which I'd bet were padded on paper, nobody's *that* stupid over there). I'm sure those kids are doing Ok now. |
