It's now official - New York is doomed |
|
|
Posted by Peter Rosa on Wed Mar 15 10:55:04 2006 Another tale of woe from today's Times:Talks to resolve the fate of ground zero broke down last night shortly before midnight when a last-minute counterproposal from Larry A. Silverstein, the developer of the site, caused state officials to accuse him of negotiating in bad faith ... no new bargaining sessions had been scheduled. In all likelihood, the impasse will cause a delay in the groundbreaking for the Freedom Tower. Looks like we're facing many more years of an empty hole downtown. People everywhere else in the country must be convinced that New Yorkers are a bunch of retards, in the unlikely event they didn't think so already. May God damn New York. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

Once the towers fell, and the shcok wore off, and I began thinking about it. I KNEW that I would never see something built there in my lifetime. At this point the Port Authority should just fill in the hole and make it a park. It wouldn't contribute much of anything to the economy but at least wouldn't be so unsightly. We lost the war, and now we've lost the peace too. In the long run, maybe at some point the city's economy will collapse, it will go into municipal bankruptcy, and the federal board appointed to run its affairs will decide to do something about Ground Zero. You're cursing New York because of this . . . ? Sounds like you're being petty. Not at all. One of the best tests of character that any person or entity can face is the ability to snap back from adversity. History is replete with stories of cities that have made speedy recoveries from destructive events. Chicago and San Francisco began rebuilding almost immediately after the fire of 1871 and the earthquake of 1906, respectively, and were larger and more prosperous in less than a decade. Cities such as Berlin made very quick recoveries from war destruction. A more tangible example is Kobe, Japan, which was almost completely devastated by a huge earthquake around a decade ago. Its total economic output recovered so quickly that it exceeded pre-earthquake levels in less than eighteen months. Compare to New York. It's been four and a half years, and there hasn't been even the barest glimmer of recovery. Not a shovelful of dirt has been turned. No one even knows for sure what form the rebuilt Ground Zero should take. New York deserves all the blame and punishment possible for what is nothing short of a mega f***-up. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

Just because? There is a glut of office space in lower Manhattan now and there was one when the Towers were standing. A good portion of the Towers were vacant and the Port Authority could not get tenants (they won't admit it but I can assure you it was so). These days you are not going to get anyone willing to occupy a floor above, lets say, 50 or 60 so any structure above that would be wasted space. I say they should put up buildings that will be practical. The time to "show-up the terrorists" has past because since things have taken so long just to get this far the impact has been lost. The families of the 9/11 victims will never agree on what should be built because most don't want anything to be built there at all. They prefer an open air memorial with nothing above it. I do not agree with their assessment that it is a cemetary since there is nothing left (at least nothing we can see) of what you would find in a cemetary - bodies. |

And there should be something ABOVE the stop! If competent minds ran the operation (or rather, if everyone responded to ONE person---or if the PANYNJ's lease of the airports were put on the line (Bloomberg has extended the leases), then we would be seeing AT WORST, the initial part of the Freedom Tower going up. |

There is a glut of office space in lower Manhattan now and there was one when the Towers were standing. A good portion of the Towers were vacant and the Port Authority could not get tenants (they won't admit it but I can assure you it was so).The official line was that after years of persistently high vacancies, the towers had finally reached near 100% occupancy just before 9/11. Of course it's possible that some space was mostly vacant as the tenants sought to sublet it. These days you are not going to get anyone willing to occupy a floor above, lets say, 50 or 60 so any structure above that would be wasted space. I don't know. Taller skyscrapers are popping up in Asian cities and don't seem to be encountering any such resistance. Unless people think that the United States is a more likely target, a questionable assumption at best. I say they should put up buildings that will be practical. The time to "show-up the terrorists" has past because since things have taken so long just to get this far the impact has been lost. I agree. It may well be that twin 110-story towers are not be the most practical use of space (those aforementioned Asian skyscrapers are motivated as much by ego as by economics). The trouble is, building nothing is far more wasteful. As for showing up the terrorists, we've already shown them that they won. What with the USA Patriot Act, the Department of Homeland Security, all the frantic talk about the Clash of Civilizations and the Caliphate, and most of all the invasion of Iraq, it's abundantly clear that America suffered a complete and humiliating defeat. I really don't think he wants to pay rent for a hole in the ground. There are a lot of bureaucratic forces keeping this project down. There's nothing wrong with the Department of Homeland Security, only the name sucks. Most countries have the same functions vested in a Ministry of the Interior, a name which we've squandered for our land management agency. As for your claims of defeat, lots of crybabies claimed that the US lost the Cold War at various points, such as when the Korean War ended, or the Berlin Wall was built. In the case of something as abstract and completely stupid as "the War on Terror." It's impossible to say whether anyone has won, and fear is the most efficient tool for maintaining power. |
