Yeah, Nevada and Arizona being right behind Texas are even more impressive. Still it does show that Texas continues to be a popular destination. I hear that your salary goes pretty far in Texas. |

A person in Texas might say the same about NY. We all tend to want to live around people like ourselves, and that includes political views. It's a big enough country. Besides like most places Texas is likely becoming more liberal. In a couple of decades Texas will be more like you are now. Of course if the trend holds by then that will be considered moderate or maybe even conservative. |

At the same time, the problem here is this state that uses tax incentives to bring business from other states. Then they have a swelling population with its inherent needs. However, the revenue necessary to meet those needs well, especially in the case of education, does not exist so they head to the Federal government seeking funding....with MY money. I do not want to support their subsidies when I'd be just as happy to see those jobs remain where they were to begin with. |

One nice thing is that TexASS has good railfans like Dave.Unless you're a freight foamer, Texas can get a little boring after a while. In contrast, in the Northeast, you have MBTA, NYCTA, SEPTA, and WMATA, TTC and STM aren't too far away, and LU is only a 7 to 8 hour flight away. |

I don't really get how so many people say they could never live in Texas.Dallas is not McAllen is not Austin is not Lubbock is not Houston is not Amarillo is not Fort Worth. I've spent considerable time in all those cities -- some I could live in, others not so much. I doubt many of the naysayers have not experienced the diversity of Texas. My guess is that some of the naysayers have never actually been there at all. |

One thing that's interesting is that almost every tiny town has a restored depot that is used as a museum displaying how the railroad helped build the town. More so than many towns and cities up east, towns in the west lived and died by the railroad. |

I've been to Dallas and El Paso plus some smaller towns. Never been to Houston, Austin, or San Antonio. I haven't liked it all that much but I get what you're saying. Texas is a huge state with lots of variety. El Paso is my least favorite city though. I'd rather live in Camden although I've never been there so maybe not. |

It's not particularly different from people who say they could never live in California based on the perception that it's somehow inherently different from their norm. Large states with large, heterogeneous populations defy the stereotyping that we seem to find so comforting in pigeonholing smaller states. California and Texas fulfill the same roles for the opposite ends of the political spectrum when in truth they're not tremendously different. |

You've obviously never visited Big Bend Country in West Texas. Much of the area is part of the Chihuahuan Desert. The desert's mountains, valleys and plains offer a rugged beauty that must be seen to be appreciated. The Hill Country region offers rolling hills with beautiful wildflowers. There are plenty of gorgeous lakes and rivers, too, because the state parks are magnificent. I'm partial to the Piney Woods in East Texas. It contains thousands of acres of pine and hardwood forests, and the state's four national forests and five state forests are here. During the fall the colors are breathtaking as the trees turn - we've got sassafras, persimmon, maples, magnolias, sweetgums, dogwoods, elms and oaks. The Rio Grande Valley in the South Texas Plains is one of the best birding and butterfly-watching spots in North America. The San Antonio River Walk is very pretty. Don't knock what you don't know! |

It's the only part of Texas that has any considerable natural beauty. Even then, next door's New Mexico blows it away. it all pales to what most of CA's landscape has to offer. The Hill Country region offers rolling hills with beautiful wildflowers. There are plenty of gorgeous lakes and rivers, too, because the state parks are magnificent. The Hudson corridor to Albany is as liberal as San Francisco. The only difference is that we do not suffer fools. Western NY is a bit more conservative, excluding some locales, but they are nothing close to the south. And surely *nothing* like Texas, even its most "liberal" parts. |
