Judging from the pics that I saw of the new FJ40, it's aiming for the Honda Element market and the rugged-off roading masculine SUV.Honda never really aimed the Element at the off-roader market. It figured that typical buyer would be a trendy, educated young person in his or her early to middle 20's, who was looking for a funky-looking but reasonably inexpensive vehicle with plenty of room to haul all things like recreational equipment, furniture (from IKEA, of course), and other gear. As things turned out the Element is not particularly popular among the Gen-Y market, but is a big hit among, of all people, seniors. The Element's wide doors and just-right seating height makes it very easy for people with limited mobility to get in and out of the vehicle. It's also possible that Honda overestimated the ability of its target market to buy new cars. After all, it's not easy making car payments every month on a Starbucks barista salary. Especially when you're also paying off student loans from your $30K/year liberal arts education, that very same education which qualified you for a career making decaf skim lattes. My LIRR/NYCT blog |
