With fields like biochemistry, the mean IQ is pretty meaningless (actually, mean IQ's are almost always pretty meaningless). What matters is the frequency of very high IQ's in the population. (Statistically speaking, you have to consider both the mean and the variance).

Correct. The point is, if the mean I.Q. of Asians is 103 or 104 compared to all Americans, the only way to account for such Asian overrepresentation in scientific and technical fields - assuming it's I.Q. that makes the difference - is if the variance for Asians is much higher and therefore there is a disproportionate number of them at the right tail of the I.Q. distribution. I don't believe there's any evidence of that at all. What's more likely is that there are factors other than raw I.Q. power that account for all the Asian scientists and engineers.
