Perhaps all those "Asian scientists and engineers" just studied a bit more diligently in school than their fellow students?

I've heard that's often the case in universities. Other students are out having fun, and many of the Asians are working away.

In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says that the high attention to detail and hard work that rice farming requires may have, over the centuries, contributed to this Asian work ethic. It's an intriguing idea, though he acknowledges that a major weakness is the fact that only parts of East Asia are rice-growing areas.
