The Jews who emigrated from the Russian Empire before the Jew Exclusion Act in 1924 were Yiddish speakers. Some of them didn't speak Russian at all.

The Soviet Union officially treated Jews as equal citizens (but de facto discrimination was rampant) and nearly all of them spoke primarily Russian. My maternal grandparents and great-grandparents could speak Yiddish but my mother and her brother cannot. They could all speak Russian.
