I speak Yiddish fluently and learned it as a child. My parents were both from Eastern Europe and Yiddish were their first languages. My father was very Americanized and he never spoke Yiddish to us. My mother was less so and always spoke in Yiddish to us. My paternal grandparents (father's parents; maternal grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz in 1944) did not speak a word of English so my brother and I were raised in Yiddish so we could speak with them. Unfortunately, with the passing of my parents and all of my Yiddish-speaking aunts and uncles, I don't have a chance to use it much anymore. |
