This is not an issue of "foreign aid" - it's a matter of being able to trade with the world or being a pariah state. Israel does not have the ability to manufacture all of its weapons itself, and even with respect to those it does manufacture, in needs to import raw materials. A result of this is that it has to take world opinion - or at least the views of the US - into account when making decisions on deals like this. Most Israelis recognize this reality, and are therefore willing to accept this deal - it's the best they were likely to get. Will it hold long term? I have my doubts - but it does leave Israel still in control of about 50% of Gaza, with the Gazan population held away from the border with Israel. There's an old saying that "the perfect is the enemy of the good" - and that has to be taken into account here. Yes, the release of vicious murderers as part of the deal is awful - it makes me physically sick to thing about that, specifically as I personally know family members of victims of some of those being released - but on the whole, there is enough positive in the deal to make it worthwhile. Note that I speak as an Israeli with multiple children in combat roles in the IDF. I'm pretty sure my views are representative of the views of the majority of Israelis. subfan |
