The ANSWER is electric traction. Look at the numbers the hybrids do with a BS gasoline-powered generator on board! And this is REALLY ON TOPIC (which is why I'm following up on the main board because FEW bother with this with all the stupid "so's your old man" political nonsense) ... what makes the R142's go is PRECISELY what's under the hood in all those HYBRIDS ... SUBWAY CAR MOTORS, quantity one, operating at 600VDC *JUST* like a subway train ... 'cept they use four per car, and auto gets by NICELY on just ONE "standard TA motor" ...

If your "FUEL" is electrons, then foreign oil is IMMIDEIATELY removed as the major issue. And "hauling trucks" can have 2 or 4 motors (and additional power draw) and STILL eliminate most of the load of imported oil. Ah ... but "residential electric baseboard heat" is a killer because of hte electric rates. PLUGGING IN a car would also be expensive. Solution, back to nukes now that lessons have been learned, and in industrial and military and SPACE service, nukes are actually quite safe. And before we deal with the "deadly hazard" stuff, live downwind of a refinery and talk to me THEN ... just as dead, just about as fast.

Since VEHICLES are the largest consumer of "the precious" it is our very love of TRAINS that actually leads to the answer for the future. Just gotta make better motors and better batteries. :)
