Columbus Day celebrates exploration, discovery, and the spirit of adventure, profound courage and individual daring that all define the very essence of Western Civilization. There were some thrilling and some tragic immediate consequences. But the landing of the crews of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria resulted in bringing the indigenous peoples of North and South America out of the Stone and Bronze ages, and into the age of the European Renaissance. Long term, the results were: available universal education, advanced medical care, comfortable standard of living, lengthening of the average lifespan, and establishment of equal rights for women.
