this was going to happen long before they became enlightened enough to treat other peoples as equals.

Agreed.

But Columbus went above and beyond typical European cruelty to the extent that other Spaniards complained about it. So even though we need to recognize his achievements we have no obligation to celebrate him as a person. (Not that I am claiming that you disagree.)
