Because all of that old code made for serious dents in performance.

Snow Leopard runs faster than any later system.

Trying to drop through code to determine what CPU it wants cut performance in half.

Wait what?

The translations from Motorola CPU's to Intel instruction functions cut it down by better than 600%. Supporting the old CPU's caused OS X to turn to taffy.

Emulation is always high overhead, but Rosetta worked very well. I'm pretty sure my newest (read: still supported) Mac is faster when booted into Snow Leopard and running a PowerPC program than when it's booted into Yosemite and running a newer replacement to same.

In actuality, running PowerPC programs actually seems smoother than running Windows programs in Wineskin.

Of course, Rosetta is not quite as good as the 68K emulator they wrote for the first PowerPC systems. Considering that my first Power Mac had to emulate half its operating system, it had to be pretty impressive.
