We're still supporting Macs back to around 2009 or so with updates. Windows anyone? :)

Microsoft supported XP until last year. Vista came out in 2007 and Microsoft plans to support it for another few years.

So if I bought a Windoze PC in 2001, which never managed to run Vista, it'd be kept updated for 13 years. If it could run Vista, it'd be supported for 14 years and counting.

A Mac, on the other hand, would have received its final update whenever Leopard lost support. Definitely before 2010.

As to Rosetta, last stop on that train was Snow Leopard.

If the system is as open source as you say, why can't I add it back to Yosemite?

You'll need to run THAT in an emulator, or just boot camp SL onto your HD.

It takes some doing to get SL working on any Mac that shipped with Lion or later.

It really runs better in VMware or VirtualBox though which can fake a Moto CPU.

Neither can emulate a PowerPC, and Snow Leopard wouldn't run on one anyway.
