W.B.'s Bus Almanac for May 24th

Posted by W.B. on Thu May 24 08:26:27 2018

May 24, 1964 - The Book of Route Modifications, Adjustments and Service Changes

Manhattan, New York
Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority

Route 107 - 106th Street Crosstown's western terminus, heretofore at 110th Street and Riverside Drive, is cut back to 106th Street and Fifth Avenue. It will thus remain until part of its easternmost route is made into a new branch of the M19 - 96th Street Crosstown line in 1974.

That's one hell of a cutback- like 2/3 of the route!

The 107, in its original iteration when launched in September 1962, was an odd duck. Its numbering was an extension of that used on Manhattan routes by Surface Transit; for part of its route (from 106th and Fifth Avenue to 110th and Riverside Drive), it travelled amongst routes of the old FACO Division; and initially it was administered by MaBSTOA as part of the NYCO Division (apparently these three nomenclatures were still used by MaBSTOA for internal purposes well into the early 1970's prior to the 1974 renumberings). For much if not all of its existence it was based out of 100th Street depot. As well, I saw on eBay 1972 bus passes which referred to the "Surface Transit Division," I suppose riding along Bronx routes or in certain areas of Manhattan served by ex-ST routes.

WB: IIRC the M-107 was only half-a-crosstown at first. It only ran between Fifth Avenue / East 106th Street and the FDR Drive at East 105th Street. This route became a branch of the M-19 (today's M-96) on January 7, 1974.

There is on eBay, a portion of one of the 'Old Look' front half rollsigns, from c.March 1964, which clearly states, "107 - 106th St. Xtown - Via-110 St.-5 Ave." Even when fully run (between Sept. 9, 1962 and May 23, 1964), it was only half on 106th Street - at 106th and 5th, prior to this 1964 date, it turned on then-still crosstown Fifth Avenue, then travelled across 110th Street to Riverside Drive. Its ridership must've been mighty low for it to be cut back like this, but (at the time) not low enough to discontinue it entirely - until Jan. 7, 1974 when it was folded into the M19.

While the main M19 branch is today's M96 (since 1993, I.I.N.M.), the 106th Street branch became the current M106 in 1995-96.

WB: The 1969 Manhattan Bus Map shows the route running on the East Side only.

That's what I mean. It had been shaped that way - only on the east side - since 1964. As seen here . . .

. . . evidently, this was prepared after May 24. Had this map been put out earlier, doubtless M107 would have travelled alongside 2, 3 and 4 at 110th Street west of Fifth, and staying next to 4 to Riverside Drive.

*Indeed, as it did, in an earlier map on this link:
Rare Bloomingdales New York City Bus Route Map 60's
Evidently, in the interim, (M)107 as Hagstrom saw it was transferred from NYCO Division to Surface Transit Division (if that Motor Coach Age article on MaBSTOA from 1972 was correct about the agency retaining the Fifth Avenue Coach Lines-era nomenclatures for the differing routes).
