Q46 Union Turnpike

Posted by Joe on Wed May 23 11:40:57 2018

Yesterday, I drove along Union Turnpike in Hillcrest and Fresh Meadows, a route I have seldom needed to travel. Westbound buses flashed a Kew Gardens double-line sign I could not read, but that was followed by "Q46 via UNION." On an old photo, I see "via UNION" also on an RTS.
---
Anyhow, I am under the impression that Union Turnpike never had a streetcar and that home construction boomed only about 1947 when North Shore Bus failed and the Board of Transportation had to pay for the new Twins and take on the North Shore routes.
---
How early was bus service provided from Kew Gardens to the City Line, about seven miles? My guess is that North Shore saw an opportunity to claim a feeder route to Independent when the Queens Blvd subway reached Kew Gardens in 1936.
---
Many thanks!

The North Shore Bus Co. started the Union Turnpike route (then Q44A) as far as Hollis Court Blvd on 12/4/39 when the area was just developing. After the city takeover the route was extended to Springfield Blvd (9/7/47), to 251 St. (11/47) and the city line (4/48) as Glen Oaks Village was being completed. The 260 St. branch began on 2/3/50.

All the above dates are from Motor Coach Age North Shore/Queens issue, April-May 1977.

Did North Shore run anything in Nassau County that became MSBA ?

Many thanks, X-Astorian, for those dates of first service. I'm beginning to catch on that Jamaica, Flushing, and Hempstead drew shoppers, and that the 164th Street streetcar bounced its way past empty lots.

I did find more information about Union Turnpike on forgotten-ny.com

North Shore Bus Co. had an extensive operation in Nassau County. They ran the N20 line from Flushing to Glen Cove, the N24 from Port Washington to Mineola. and the N22 from Mineola tom Hicksville. These routes were sold to Schenck Transportation in 1947, when NYC took over North Shore, as they were not permitted to operate in Nassau. These routes were originally trolley lines of the New York & North Shore Traction Co. North Shore also had some express bus routes from Nassau and Queens to Manhattan in the 1930's.

Bringing it up Lakeville to the then LIJ was a big plus. Used to see older or ill folks dragging up from Union to get to LIJ or to Parker

Are Queens buses like the Q46 allowed to pick up in Nassau County on Lakeville Road?

I'm not sure exactly what constitutes the border. If it is Lakeville RD, there would only be the 2 ? stops after Union Tpk before you turned into the hospital which would be back in NYC. Coming back, you would be on the West side of Lakeville, I'm again not sure if that is NYC or Nassau County.

All of Lakeville Roard is within Nassau County.
The NYCT buses that serve Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream are totally within Nassau County, and the do pick up passengers there.

I took the 44A traveling out to LIJ many times, but later on after the time the 46 bus was extended up, when my parents did various stints at LIJ and Parker, I always drove, so I don't know if it picks up on Lakeville before it makes the right to go West. I can't imagine it doesn't, like the Green Acres buses.
