Q46 Union Turnpike

Posted by Joe on Wed May 23 11:40:57 2018

Yesterday, I drove along Union Turnpike in Hillcrest and Fresh Meadows, a route I have seldom needed to travel. Westbound buses flashed a Kew Gardens double-line sign I could not read, but that was followed by "Q46 via UNION." On an old photo, I see "via UNION" also on an RTS.
---
Anyhow, I am under the impression that Union Turnpike never had a streetcar and that home construction boomed only about 1947 when North Shore Bus failed and the Board of Transportation had to pay for the new Twins and take on the North Shore routes.
---
How early was bus service provided from Kew Gardens to the City Line, about seven miles? My guess is that North Shore saw an opportunity to claim a feeder route to Independent when the Queens Blvd subway reached Kew Gardens in 1936.
---
Many thanks!
