W.B.'s Bus Almanac for December 17th

Posted by W.B. on Sun Dec 17 06:45:19 2017

Another in a series of supplements to IRTRedbirdR33's "Tuscarora Almanacs"

December 17, 1956 - The Book of Corporate Changes

New York City
Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, Inc.
Third Avenue Transit Corporation

After a few months of negotiations, Fifth Avenue Coach Lines acquires Third Avenue Transit Corporation, the parent of Surface Transportation Corporation of New York and Westchester Street Transportation Company, Inc. Surface's six routes in Manhattan, and 42 in the Bronx, are hereafter administered under a newly-created operating subsidiary owned wholly by FACL, Surface Transit, Inc. (Its routes, however, will not be part of FACL's bus route map which will come out in a few months' time.) Westchester Street Transportation will be run by FACL until 1969 when all its routes are sold to Liberty Lines, Inc.

Thanks. I was wondering when exactly FACCO took over STS. I recall that when FACCO went to a simpler 2 tone green and cream paint scheme, Surface Transit adopted a similar simpler scheme than the STS one but with red instead of green for the lower half of the buses. After a few years, Surface Trans buses adopted the identical green/cream paint scheme of FACCO.

Well, it was certainly after NYC Omnibus became Fifth Avenue Coach Lines, that's for sure . . . a lot of places insisted the takeover was when NYC Omnibus was still NYC Omnibus . . .

And the "simpler" 2 tone green and cream scheme was actually within the last year or two of NYCO, carried over to after it became FACL. #2969, at the time of the 1955 photo session with Jackie Gleason and his "Honeymooners" cast, is testament to this. (Wouldn't be surprised if buses from the FACCo side of the fence went "simplified" in that period.)

In the early 1950's, Fifth Avenue Coach and NYC Omnibus adapted simpler paint schemes to replace the rather elaborate two-toned green with a sweeping stripe, along with a contrasting cream top half. The simpler schemes were green and tan for FACCO's basic routes, and green and cream for NYCO.

Surface Transit, after its absorption by FACCO, was notorious for buses appearing in a wide variety of paint schemes. Prior to 1956 Surface buses sported two basic red and white schemes (with and without the white bib stripe along the sides), and a few in an experimental red, white and blue scheme. After FACCO took over, Surface buses appeared in many different varieties of red/white, red/yellow, green/cream, green/tan, including some buses never changed from the original white bib stripe. And when some new GMC buses were assigned to Surface routes in 1959 and 1960, two newer schemes were introduced - for the 5106s and 5301s.

After the FACL takeover of Surface Transportation, the plan was to maintain the red and cream scheme on Surface buses. I have seen a route map of 1956 showing a drawing of the new 1957 Mack C-49's on the cover of the map in those colors. However plans soon changed. As FACL realized it had to replace most Surface buses with FACL's own buses, which were always maintained to a high standard. Rather than costly repaints it was cheaper and quicker to keep the green and cream colors and just change the lettering. So Surface Transit adopted the green and cream out of practical necessity.

Thanks for that info. I was about 5 years old when the green buses started appearing in place of some of the red ones, and I always wondered what the reason was. Now I know.
