Bx8, Williamsbridge Road |
|
Posted by Joe on Wed Jun 24 13:32:15 2015 In October of 1927, Surface Transportation was authorized to operate twelve bus lines in The Bronx that probably had assorted municipal "emergency" permissions in the previous decade, under the marking "Dept. of Plant & Structures." Route 8 was and still is the Williamsbridge Road route.--- A 1946 Geographia Complete Street Guide has this listing: WILLIAMSBRIDGE ROAD. Route 8 -- (2.61 miles) -- From White Plains Ave. and Burke Ave.; via White Plains Ave., Adee Ave., Williamsbridge Rd.,East Tremont Ave., Lane Ave., Benson St., to Westchester Ave. --- In 2015, Bx8 is a mile longer on the north end (continuing to about the Williamsbridge-Wakefield border) and four miles longer on the south end, serving Throg's Neck to Locust Point. |

To quote John McNamara's "History in Asphalt":"This was an Indian footpath for centuries before it was widened to accommodate the rude drags of the early settlers. A John Williams (early 1700's) had a farm near the present Gun Hill Road station at White Plains Road, and the the bridge over the Bronx river was called Williams' Bridge. The road was an important artery during the Revolutionary War and continues in importance to this day. Ezra Cornell's house was on this road at Silver Street (1807) and in the 1890's the road flanked Morris Park racetrack." --- The geographic terms Williamsbridge, Highbridge, and Kingsbridge each speak of neighborhoods adjacent to a bridge. --- It seems that the Village of Williamsbridge was incorporated in 1888, but was annexed by the City of New York in 1895. |

Quite astounding, the photo at the link below shows a double-decker bus in 1914 on Williamsbridge Road at Pelham Parkway. It is not in regular service, but rather seems to tout the sale of lots from the Pearsall Estate north of Pelham Parkway. Recall that this is very close to the Pelham Parkway Station of the New York, Westchester, and Boston, now served by the #5 subway.--- The photo is from a collection at the New-York Historical Society. A slider atop the photo allows it to be enlarged for inspection. Note the tires! --- Link |
