The path of Williamsbridge Road is quite old. To quote John McNamara's "History in Asphalt":
"This was an Indian footpath for centuries before it was widened to accommodate the rude drags of the early settlers. A John Williams (early 1700's) had a farm near the present Gun Hill Road station at White Plains Road, and the the bridge over the Bronx river was called Williams' Bridge. The road was an important artery during the Revolutionary War and continues in importance to this day. Ezra Cornell's house was on this road at Silver Street (1807) and in the 1890's the road flanked Morris Park racetrack."
---
The geographic terms Williamsbridge, Highbridge, and Kingsbridge each speak of neighborhoods adjacent to a bridge.
---
It seems that the Village of Williamsbridge was incorporated in 1888, but was annexed by the City of New York in 1895.
