Grumman 870 history in NYC

My mind has been hitting history and old school..especially regarding the days of the Grumman 870 buses and the double decker buses that ran on Madison Avenue. I'm trying to remember what depots had the Grummans and what were used to replace them when they left? I remember that UP had some and wound up with 1300's and 1400's RTS buses. What other depots had the Grummans? I know UP,ENY(i think),HUD,54th,Walnut,QV,CAS. Any help would be appreciated. And when they were pulled, they were pulled the same day at all the depots? Even the ones that were running?

126 St also had them. I rode them on the M22.

When they were recalled I also remember riding WAMTA buses on the M22 also.

Most but not all depots had Grummans. The one depot that comes to mind that had no Grummans was Gleason, Fifth Ave. back then.
Fresh Pond originals were 322-342, PA70-PA77, 526-533. The 500's were later transferred out elsewhere.
When FP became a Grumman/ non-RTS depot, they recieved PA6-PA23,PA78-PA84, PA131-PA137 and 209-229 from various depots.
PA6-PA23 from ENY?, PA78-PA84 FLU and/or 126 St., PA131-PA137 OA units from 100 St. The 200's from ENY?

I forgot to add, the day they were finally taken out of service, I was signing papers for a car in Bay Ridge, just blocks from the ARMY Terminal yard where they were sent. What a sight to see hundreds of buses in convoys throughout that morning.

I knew there was another. Funny thing though, a driver who lived in my neighborhood back then drove the B41. I once asked him how he liked the Grummans, I didn't know at that time FLA had none. Think he told me that they were OK.

Most TA/OA depots rec'd Grumman 870s, but a few didn't. At OA, OHS and WF didn't get Grumman 870s. After WF closed, Walnut also didn't get Grummans. To my delight, my home depot, KB had a bunch (I think it was approx 81) of Grumman 870s.

At TA, I recall XT, FI and FLA as those depots that didn't receive any Grumman 870s.

I'm pretty sure those OA buses (PA131-PA137) came from AMS. 100st was one of the OA depots that didn't get Grumman 870s (The other was WF). I also recall that the '77 Grumman Flxibles (9000-9309) were transferred to those depots that didn't get Grumman 870s.

the Q-31 had grummans for awhile, but i don't think the flushing lines ran them. the Q-26 and Q-27 went straight from the old 7100 series to the RTS's-- 1200s and 1500s.

Great shots!!!! I remember the first time i rode them aroud 82-83 when they were assigned to the B3. Here is where i remember them being:

Brooklyn:
5th Av
Ulmer Park
ENY
Fresh Pond

Do know that Green,Triboro and Queens Transit had them. Anyone know why Command never recieved them?

Indeed WayneJay, Old 100th Street Depot used to have high 9100's to low 9200's Flxibles buses until newer RTS 3000's came in late 1983.

ALL Queens Depots had Grummans.

Flushing had some 300s along with two-digit numbers (I forgot)
Jamaica had 200s
Queens Village had 300s and 500s.

Also, bus #199 (ex-100?) ran out of QV.

When the Grummans left, I know Queens Village AND Jamaica got a bunch of RTS and GMC New Looks (NON-WMATA)

I'm not sure if Crosstown was open during the Grumman era.

I do remember their last night of service, the day David Gunn declared that when they pulled in for the night, they weren't coming back out the next day. I was living along the B24/29 route (maybe it was re-designated by then) around Meeker/Kingsland Avenues. I saw one on the route and it was a FP assigned bus.

Crosstown ceased serving as an in-service depot November or December, 1981, I believe. It had to be somewhere relatively close to that time because I recall my father having to change depots in 1982 around the time of a family event (or I wouldn't have remembered it at all).

The TA/OA Grumman 870s were sort of in 3 groups. The first (and largest) group were (TA) 201-452, (OA) 601-810. The second group were the "PA" units which were PA1-PA175 and the last 200 buses which were delivered after the A-frame retrofit were the lift-equipped buses. Those units were (TA) 453-552 amd (OA) 811-910. Originally, (IIRC) all depots with Grumman 870s rec'd buses from each group.

Also, bus #199 (ex-100?) ran out of QV.

Yes. I heard NYCTA was allowed to keep the demo bus to replace a '77 Flxible that was destroyed by fire. Then of course the TA got the 13 buses that were originally destined for Ave B, E Bway (but they folded) which were #553-565. This is why NYCTA had 851 Grumman 870s. 837-bus order, plus 1 demo and 13 Ave B E. Bway buses.

Yes it did.

In recent times, it became a vendor location for warranty work on New Flyers.

It is still used by The Dept. of Subways Car Equipment Division as the base for the emergency trucks. They'll respond to trains laying down and other unusual incidents.

There is somewhat of a war going on if the property will remain a TA facility. The Hipsters were promised a park some time ago and the trucks were supposed to be moved to a site near the WillyB, but for some reason this is being held up, so they remain in Greenpoint for now.

54th St had them. After they were pulled, the bone yard was raided for ANYTHING with wheels! (windows were optional) 54th St went from having shiney buses to a ragtag fleet of old Flxibles and a handful of old GMC fishbowls. Ahhhhh, those were the days!
Knuckle buster shifters, 8 and 40 AC, and no power steering!

Watchouge and Jewett to be exact for route S112 which eventually became S62. That was the days in Staten Island when the S6(now the S66) was the only bus running on Victory Blvd all times-every other bus was a rush hour run and terminated at Victory-jewett Middays.

Agreed. In each group COL had the higest numbers which would be 810 for the first group, PA175 for the "PA" buses and 910 for the lift-equipped buses.

Weren't you around when they had them and the Metros? I couldn't stand driving either one, especially the Grummans, because their steering was so light you could turn the wheel with your pinky finger and could never really feel the road, especially dangerous in the rain. The Metros had "heavier" steering, but still not to my liking.

How long did the PBL 870s last? I know that those at Jamaica Buses lasted about 20 years, but what about everyone else?

first pic was actually Broadway/Flushing..that super market chain been gone from around north Brooklyn for years...
use to be my favorite market place to shop..
