How was the transfer situation at Roslyn LIRR?To be fair, on the way up the bus beforehand broke down. (which sucks if it's on hourly headways). The riders really had no reason to complain. What's there to complain about? That their bus has other riders? That they're on a bus where there is no empty seat next to them? Complain when you get flagged, complain about bunching, not because everyone doesn't have a seat. This change makes sense in that Roslyn Road is basically desolate and there is no reason for a bus to travel down that road during off peak times. Even with a broke down bus before it everyone was able to fit on. Now imagine two half-full buses traveling the distance that the N23 and N27 travel, and the costs involved? |

I think the ridership numbers will be much higher next Sunday. It was Easter, ridership was light. So everyone was "just" able to fit on the bus. Saturdays the n27 often has a few standees, now you're going to put those riders on n23's south of Roslyn that are already fairly full. Every bus will be a sardine can. The n23 should run every 30 minutes between Roslyn & HTC, or one N40/41 each hour should travel to Roslyn RR...to provide half hourly service between Roslyn & HTC.Do the math...can you fit a bus with a fully seated load onto another bus with a fully seated load? There will be flagging or bodies pressed together like sardines. Sure in the city where a bus or subway runs every 5-10 mins no big deal, but waiting an hour for those conditions..I dont think so. I already spoke to several riders who are going to look at Oyster Bay LIRR schedules... |

How was the passenger exchange along Wilis/Mineola Aves?I'm trying to picture everything. So Northbound, many passengers transferred to the N27 at Roslyn LIRR station. Then on the 27, more transferred from the N20 to the N27 at Northern Blvd and the bus had a nice seated load to Glen Cove? Southbound, Former N21 Riders and N27 riders road a seat loaded bus, where half the passengers transferred to the N20, and the other half transferred to a half-loaded N23. Then from the Roslyn LIRR station, the N23 had a virtually fully seated load to HTC? |

Uh, yes you could fit 2 seated loads together.Anyway, the crowds may be higher next week, but you have to consider that half of the crowding on that bus was due to the first bus breaking down. That means that, unless there are buses breaking down regularly, that's the worse you should be experiencing. |

Only thing is it was a holiday, there was lighter ridership. Its not even Sundays I'm concerned about, but Saturdays. The 3:55pm and 4:55pm trips from Glen Cove already leave Roslyn with standees, now they will be put onto an N23 which will probably be just as crowded.Saturdays get almost same load of workers that weekdays do... |

Maybe if it's just a problem during the evening rush hour, you could tell NICE to add service just for that time period (however they want to do it. Extend a few N27 runs, add a couple of N23 runs, or send up an N40/41)In any case, I do agree with N6 that the bus was crowded, but a bus can only be considered "crushloaded" if people are squeezed together and can't get on. That bus is pretty much like what I have to deal with on the S46 with no missing buses (I mean, not every bus is like that, but during rush hour, I'd consider loads like that to be a regular thing). By the way, I found this article about additional funding. I don't think this particular change has anything to do with the N80/N81. Technically the N80/N81 don't share a trunk and they are separate routes. The N51, N50, N36, N80, N81 all kept their hourly headways, probably for coverage. Combined routes got frequency reductions so that the main trunks got hourly service and the individual branches got reduced frequencies.If you analyze this change, Veolia realized that Willis Ave should be connected to Hempstead and Roosevelt Field. Roslyn Road is just a bypass essentially, and it's a waste of resources to have Half-full (or less) N21's N23's and N27 riding around. From the MTA's PDF on LIB ridership, the N23 is more cost efficient to run. Possibly because there is more passenger exchange on the N23 while the N27 has more-so thru riders. That's probably why they chose the N23 to cover the route as opposed to running the N27 on Willis with the N23 ending at Roslyn LIRR. If the N23 is generating more short trips and passenger exchange, and N27 riders are just trying to get to Glen Cove, then it makes more sense to have the N27 riders transfer since the N27 is basically a shuttle in the first place. The same can be applied to the N21, if the riders are just going from Glen Cove to Northern Blvd, then they can use the N27 shuttle to get to the N20. They're reducing redundant (passenger) trips, even though these changes are on routes that originally do not run on the same street (N21/N27 & N23/N27), the basic trips are the same. Northern Blvd to Glen Cove, Hempstead to Glen Cove(with no use for Roslyn Road). If the problem is just the Saturday evening "rush hour" they could throw a bus in there and call it a day. If the buses get crowded at a particular time frame, that doesn't constitute 30 min headways all day. That would essentially be the same as hourly headways on both routes which is what they changed. |

It's why I'm suprised they didn't add extra trips, and stuck to the clockface headways on weekends. Like I said, next weekend will be the real test. |

I mean, I've had some pretty crowded experiences, but none as crowded at that.* There was once when an S46 came out of St. George, crowded because the ferry was late, and then just outside, there was a huge crowd of school kids. They were literally pushing each other in the way they do in Japan. * At the beginning of the last school year, they didn't have any eastbound trippers from my school, so everybody packed onto the first bus that came. If it was an Orion 7, you would have kids sitting on that area immediately to the left (that grey platform over the wheel), and you'd have kids sitting in the back, leaning on the window so somebody else could take the seat in front of them (leaning forward so they didn't have to sit on their shoes). Plus, in the area by the single seats, you'd have a kid sitting, and then a kid would be standing in front of them. I mean, talk about being hesitant to flag people! * Another time, in the morning, the S46 came in, and usually I start pushing my way to the back, but it was so crowded, I ended up getting stuck between 2 girls, and I'm pretty skinny. Those were decent-lloking girls too! I'm sure there's probably a bunch of other experiences with crowding, not to mention all those times I've been flagged because people didn't want to move to the back. |

Well it seems like the schedules allow enough running time. Probably mixed up drivers making mistakes combined with passenger questions. On Sunday I forgot to mention on the n/b N23 trip the driver forgot to make the left from Roslyn Rd onto Hillside and forgot she was an an N23, passengers told her she had to go left, she turned into a side street, backed the bus up and turned around...It is the first day, hopefully by next week things will be a little more organized. |

To me, perhaps some signs should be posted around the county at turning intersections with directional arrows for the bus routes. A sign with N23 <-, for instance, could be posted. |

If my route was changing, I'd go out the day before or before my shift to go over the route. In all of my career, never made a wrong turn this way. And, since sometimes diversions were necessary, I always carry a street map for Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties to check out any possible detour route if necessary. The Command Center always agreed with any route I might have chosen. There is a Hound that does the same thing, and he's even better at it than I am..... |

Something kind of like this happened to me at Greyhound. For almost a week solid I was getting runs that went thru Jersey (Philly, AC, Montreal, Syracuse, etc) so everything was pull out of the Port and go straight for the Lincoln Tunnel. Towards the end of the week they gave me Boston Local, so the entire time I'm telling myself go to 10th Av, go to 10th Av, but the second I got up the ramp and saw the short turn for the Lincoln was open that day, I went right for it. I got too far into my turn when I realized what I was doing and had to go up to the GW in rush hour (first stop was White Plains, got there an hour late) |
