Looking at one of the Bronx rollsigns, there was a Bx21 via Astoria Blvd and a Q89 Elmhurst crosstown. What was the routing for these and how long did they last? I've never heard of these routes before

I remember riding the Bx-21 from Astoria Blvd. over the Triboro Bridge into the south Bronx. I think it was a 60 minute headway on that route, if I'm not mistaken. I believe it was eliminated when they totally revamped the Bronx bus routes & route numbers in 1982.

Running between 81 St - Northern Blvd <---> Queens Blvd - Grand Av

In the 1980s Queens Bus Map notes... running 40 minute headway:
Weekdays: 7:40 AM to 5 PM
Weekends: 8:40 AM to 5 PM

Probably discontinued in early 1990s.

That would also be the first or second one with the Q88 (which was a brand-new route at the time). The Q89 though seemed pretty pointless, since it didn't go on to Queens Center and Alexander's.

I think the Q89 was originally Fifth Avenue Coach route #16, The Q32(ex M32) was originally Fifth Avenue Coach route #15.

I never saw the old Bx-21, but my guess is that it operated from either (the original) West Farms or 146th Street. The Q-89 was also an OA route and it that operated from 54th St depot.

I once saw an allowance for an extension in the split blue-and-red destination signs:

Blue: Q89 82 St-Bway-Queens Blvd

Red: 63 Dr

Yet, nobody ever bothered to actually extend the route after the stores opened.

The Q89 was always in the same depot as the M32, whether that depot was 54th Street or Hudson.

It appears to have been a local version of the Q53 between Elmhurst Hospital and Queens Boulevard.

Too bad we already have one of those now… the Q53!

Between 1972 and 1974, the Elmhurst #16 (later Q89) was designated QM16, and the Fifth Avenue-Jackson Heights #15 (later M32, now Q32) was designated QM15. The 'QM16' designation was odd given that in no part of Manhattan did the line travel - but it, like the QM15/M32, was assigned out of 54th Street depot in Manhattan. A few pics with QM15 designation signs on the front have turned up; we've yet to see any QM16's (let alone pics of Q89's).

Those nomenclatures ended up duplicative of two Green Bus Lines express routes to Manhattan (now under MTA Bus aegis) - QM15 out of Woodhaven/Lindenwood, and QM16 out of Neponsit/Far Rockaway.

I have seen a Blitz red/blue Q89 roll sign. It read Q89 Elmhurst Crosstown on one side and Queens Blvd/63 Dr on the destination side. Of course this was a proposed extension that was not implemented. This was not bus in service. Normally the Q89 had RTS's with digital signs the read Q89 ELMHURST cROSSTOWN & Q89 QUEENS BLVD.

None of these links work today (2017); but I have to wonder if any updates to 'batwing' side signs for MaBSTOA routes in Manhattan were made after that dated Dec. 13, 1966 (as sliced and diced individual side signs of most routes attest; one of which reads '2 - 5th & Madison via Lenox'). Of all the pics I've seen of batwinged buses on the then-101A route, none of them have '101A - 3rd-Lex-Lenox Aves' side signs. That same seller has four sections of a post-1969 (printed c.1971?) side sign from the non-batwinged 5303 class, by which time the Fifth/Madison/Lenox 2 was gone; unfortunately the sections now being sold don't include the Third/Lexington/Lenox 101A route that began operations on the same day that Fifth/Madison/Lenox 2 was discontinued.

It seems that after this period... MaBSTOA largely ignored those side signs. For instance, the pre-'72 new looks which came with the destination/route signs (white lettering on black background without borough prefix) did (later) get destination roll signs with the borough prefix, but most retained their original route signs. In fact, usually when an OA bus was shifted to another depot... Obviously, it rec'd a destination roll sign for it's new depot, but they didn't bother to swap the route sign. I remember at NYCTA where the side sign was simply a smaller destination sign, they not only swapped them when a bus changed depots, but bus operators consistently used them.

I know on the '64-'66 (non-batwing) Fishbowls, when the M2A (as known from 1966 to '74) was operating northbound, some side signs read "2 - Madison Ave via 116 St" while southbound they read "2 - 5th & 7th Avenues." Very few had read "2A - 5th & Madison via Seventh Ave" as they should have. This contrasts with frequent updates of TA side signs in Brooklyn and Queens (especially for batwings) during 1971.

I vaguely remember some front and side destination signs in Brooklyn which simply read 'Tilden Avenue' and something like 'West Avenue'. No route number, what was their purpose?

Yeah, there were some Queens routes like that too for 179th St IND Subway. I think someone once said such readings were used on some rush hour trippers that varied from the regular route

Back when I was attending Queens College and dating in the outer portions of Queens, I noticed that it was quite common for all the bus routes going to Main St to carry the same destination signs as the bus in the photo since all the routes were going to the same place and almost all of them ultimately via Northern Blvd. It was only necessary to carry the route number outbound since those buses were going to different places. I believe that buses out of Qns Village depot had similar signs that read “To 165 St Terminal” for a similar reason.

That 'Tilden Avenue' sign was even stranger. Not a major destination like a subway terminal. Ages ago a trolley ran along a portion of Tilden Avenue to the Holy Cross cemetery. Maybe the MTA still held that ancient franchise and had to at least provide signage for it. One more obscure transit mystery.

The 'West Ave & Ocean Pkwy' sign makes a bit more sense, that was a location near Lincoln H.S.

Looks like along the way, the old FACCo '10 - Broadway' pull-in/pull-out only route - designated 'M10 Broadway' on 1973 side signs for GMC T6H-5309A's and 5310A's - disappeared from the itinerary.

I must say that the photo links made "at the time" would no longer hold. I hope people who frequent and post on this board saved the pics, especially the side roll signs . . . quite a few have become lost to time.
