AC Transit (Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District) is one of several bus systems serving parts of Alameda County and Contra Costa County in the western coastal area of the East Bay. AC Transit’s main service area is in Oakland with multiple lines beginning or ending at BART stations as well as Transbay lines leading into Downtown San Francisco at the Transbay Terminal.
AC Transit’s fleet consists of NABIs, New Flyer D60HFs, MCI D4500s for most of the Transbay service and Van Hools of the 30, 40 & 60 foot variety.

Van Hool A300K #5001 at El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station. 5001 is one of two series of 30 foot Van Hools operating for AC Transit:

Van Hool A330 #1004, one of several painted in the “Rapid” scheme for Route 72R is seen exiting El Cerrito Del Norte on its way to San Pablo:

Route 72 is split into three lines (72 Local, 72M & 72 Rapid). All three maintain 15 minute or less headways throughout the day. New Flyer D60HF #1903 is one of 30 purchased by AC Transit in 1996 and notorious for being assigned to this route:

Van Hool AG300 #2051 is resting in-between runs on Route 1 in Downtown Berkeley. #2051 is one several Van Hool artics used for heavy density service throughout the region:

Several former AC Transit buses have second lives, some far away and some closer to home. Here is Ex-AC Transit Gillig Phantom #2819, now in service for UC Berkeley on one of its shuttle routes:

NABI #3022, featuring the latest AC Transit paint scheme on Route 12, one of several that connect Berkeley with Downtown Oakland:

The newest buses in the fleet are the 1200 series of Van Hools. Major differences include only having two doors and Air Conditioning. Here is #1201 assigned to the F, the heaviest of the Transbay routes:

AC Transit’s first venture into Low Floors were two orders of NABI 40-LFWs purchased between 1999 & 2001. The first of these orders were the 4000s. A number of these were sold but many still exist including 4053, seen in Downtown Oakland on Route 14:

The second order of NABI 40-LFWs were ordered and assigned to Route 72M under a special paint scheme. Here is NABI #7215 on its home line in Oakland:

The last set of High Floor buses ordered by AC Transit were the 3100 series NABIs. Here is 3125 assigned to Route 14 at the Downtown Oakland Terminus:

Nice shots, AC Transit is my favorite transit agency.

Gotta love these NABIs and New Flyer D60s. The New Flyer 1900 series (1901-1930) are scheduled to be retired in November 2010. The only 60 footers left will be the Vanhool AG300s. The NABIs will be retired within the next 5 years or so. The NABIs that were retired were 16 of the 7200s in 2008 and all of the 2900 series (71 buses) in 2007/2009.

Saw Vanhool 1069 on the 99 Line today heading towards Union City Bart Station. The Vanhools suck so much.

So...me seeing and photographing 7215 was extremely lucky? I thought AC Transit knocked off a lot of the 4000s, not the Rapid buses...

Your picture of 4053 is a 2003 NABI

Great work. It's a shame that AC Transit has lost some of the variety in its fleet that it had in the late 80s when I first visited the SF Bay Area. In 1988, IIRC, they had:

GM Fishbowls (late 70s?)
Flxible New Looks
M-A-N artics
(Old) Flyer D901 or D902s
Neoplan AN440A (!) Only place in California I had seen them aside from SCRTD.
(I think)Gillig Phantoms

Even in 1996, during my only visit where I stayed in Oakland they had the Phantoms, a few of those old Flyers, New Flyer D40 (HF), possible some D60HF, not sure if they had their first NABIs yet, I did see one during my last Bay Area visit in September 1997. Since that time, they've fallen in love with Van Fool :(

The Rapid/Transbay painted Lowfloor 7200 series NABIs were the only NABIs that ACT got rid of from the lowfloor fleet. The original fleet was 23 buses (7201-7223) and now only 7 remain in the fleet: 7205, 7209, 7211, 7215, 7218,7219, 7220. The other Lowfloor NABIs are 4001-4021 & 4051-4090 and they all still remain in the fleet. 4001-4021 were put into service in 2000 & 4051-4090 were put into service in 2003.

The Gillig Phantoms they had at the time were the 40ft: 1300s (100), 1400s (85), 1500s (35), 35ft: 2000s (50), 40ft: 2600s (52), 2700s (61), and the 2800s (60).

The Neoplan AN-440A were the 1200s (61). The New Flyers were D60: 1800s (30) & 1900s (30), 35ft: 2400s (30) and the 40ft 2500s (78). The Flyer D-901s were a total of 249 buses but were all retired by 1993.

All of the 30ft buses now are all Vanhool A300Ks, by November 2010 the 60ft buses will also be all Vanhools unless ACT wise-up and buy from another bus manufacturer. The only 40ft buses now are NABIs and Vanhools and the Vanhools are pushing the NABIs out.

Hmm, I coulda sworn I saw a 2500 Flyer during my visit in March 1996, maybe not. It was at the MacArthur BART station.

You are correct in seeing a 2500 in 1996, the D-901s were the ones that were retired by 1993. The 1989 New Flyer 2500s were retired in 2004 along with the 1800/2400 New Flyers.

I have been told that about 6 of the old Flyer D901s were replaced and retired in 97 by the 2900's NABI 416s.

Maybe it was one of those I saw. And I saw one of the NABIs when I visited the Bay Area for the last time in September 1997. At the time, I had never seen a NABI 416, so I didn't know what the hell it was. The next year, I moved to South Florida, where Mimai-Dade Transit had just gotten in 50 of them (most of which are still running, but they don't have much time left).

Actually, the D901s hung around until about 1997, when the first batch of 416s came in.

I just find out that some of the remaining D-901s were retired when the 2900 series NABIs came in 1997, so they were some still in service in 1996 and its possible you did see one.
Link:
http://groups.google.com/group/norcalbusfans/browse_thread/thread/90ffc0e682a7b2e4

I also just heard that as of 6/10/2010 AC Transit retired some of their New Flyer D60HF (1914, 1919, 1926, 1927) and some of the Flexibles (152, 155). The New Flyers will be missed, but I hated the Flexibles and thought that they should have been retired years ago. The Flexes were built in 1992 and the New Flyers in 1996. The Vanhools are now more closer to completely controlling AC Transit's fleet, they already control the 30ft buses after the 30ft 1991 Gillig Phantoms (2700s) were retired earlier this year.
