On The QM1A now and when I was in middle school on the BXM3 you had to swipe the student card and put in 2.50 in change for the 5 bucks.I doubt I would pay 7.50 for express bus service. I'll take the 2 trains and a bus to get to/from school first. I already have a bone to pick with MTA over the X32. Whats the point of the bus serving the 2 Bx specialized high schools if I cant use my student metrocard on the bus??! |

First of all the law is that MTA must have a balanced budget. It's the politicians who created the MTA, they hire the people to run it, so they have to go back to the politicians for more funding. It's a numbers game. The politicians don't want to suffer the ire of their constituents due to service cutbacks. They threatened express bus cutbacks in 1995 and worked it out. The X51 ridership was very vocal, I was at Queens Boro Hall at the public hearings. Second, as a regular poster you should be aware of this, express buses have much higher overhead than local routes. There is no turnover of passengers and new revenue coming in throughout the course of the trip and express buses have very high peak commuter traffic with not much off peak. With that, the buses are full coming in the AM, empty going back to the depot, empty coming in the afternoon and full going home. You can't park all of them in Manhattan during the day. |

It's to deter people from using services. An express bus with 30 $5 paying riders will now have 10 $7.50 paying riders. The buses will get cut (insufficient ridership). Those remaining who pay $7.50 will lose interest in waiting 25 minutes instead of 10 minutes for a bus. What's with this New York City Transit Agency that is supposed to operate 250 AAR buses? Its supposed to cost less- 49 an hour? But hey, 6 bucks for a ride. |

I don't think AAR takeover is about money. I think it has to do with the fact that coordinating 26 operators is a pain in the rear. A few are good and a few are really bad. It looks like the MTA will take all contracts that cost more than their service over. That makes sense. |

They deal in Europe too. Lived there for 5 months earlier this year, never liked having 1 EUR and 2 EUR coins. I was in Vancouver for a few days in August 2007, and wound up with 15 CAD in dollar coins by the time I left because I never thought to look through the coin part of my wallet when I made small purchases, and then amassed a significant number of them. I fail to see where the "inconvenience" is. There is a simllar situation in the outer areas of Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx where there are no subway stations close by. First time riders pay cash the first time they ride a bus to a subway station, then they can purchase a Metro Card regularly from that point on. I would assume that thousands of people have gone through that routine since Metro Cards were originally introduced, and life is still going on as we know it. |

George P. was the first one to make the customers pay more of the costs of operations, so it looks like we're going to get closer to that now. The unlimited local rides aren't that much cheeper then pay as you go unless you are in and out of the subway/bus all day long. Not many folks do that, so I don't see them going away. |

Conductors should be collecting fares by hand on the SIR at stations with no fare control. It would work like this: Metrocard goes in, SIR ticket comes out. You don't have a ticket when you board, the C/R or brakeman (redeploy unneeded subway crews to SIR as rear brakemen) collects a higher fare say $4 or so. |

Yeah, but what I mean by that is they will use the local bus or subway. Call me selfish I just want to raise ridership and keep my job. What you state is common sense, but if common sense were common... |

Its similar to the Orion I's run by the Hascidics with the cup or bottle taped to the stancions in the front of the bus instad of an actual farebox, if that's what you mean. |

Here's a little math that I use in order to use up the entire balances of PPR cards, without geting snarky looks from station agents or adding odd amounts @ no bonus.1) Set aside a card specifically for the express bus (xfer to or from subway or local bus OK). 2) Load it with $50. With the bonus, you get a card valued @ $57.50. After 11 rides, you're down to $2.50. 3) Re-load it with another $50. You'll now have a $60 card ($50 load+leftover $2.50+$7.50 bonus = $60) 4) 12 rides later, the card is completely exhausted. 5) If $50 is too much to lay out all at once, it can be done n increments of $25, but it'll just take twice as long to get to $0 Similar math works on a card set aside for subway or local bus: 1) Load it with $20. With the bonus, you get a $23 card. 2) 11 rides later, you have $1. 3) Re-load another $20. ($20 load, $3 bonus, $1 leftover= $24) 4) 12 rides later, the card is empty. |

I think that actually is a very good idea. Considering how central a point the mall is on SI and how many folks take the bus to and from it. |
