Fifty-Eight Joralemon Street?

The NYPD allowed the AP to visit the hidden exit — fronted by the phony house in a quiet residential neighborhood — on the condition that its origins and location not be disclosed. The department also barred photos.

Located in the tunnel just east of the river, the exit leads to a grimy lit set of metal stairs that ascend past utility boxes and ventilation shafts into a bleak, windowless room with a door. Anyone opening the door would find themselves on a stoop — part of the facade replicating a town house.

The passageway once was secured from the outside only by a giant bolt in the middle of the door that was opened with a tire iron. It's now rigged with silent alarms and motion detectors that would alert police to an intruder.

The security reflects concerns that a terrorist could use the passageway to sneak into the system, or try to tamper with the ventilation to make a chemical or biological attack more lethal.

Actually, the pictures are in one of the older books about the subway system. I have the book, and describes it. I won't go into detail, but it shows a picture of it inside this subway book.

I give up. Anyone who's anyone in the TA knows about this fan plant. It's been there before 2001; and probably before I was born (don't ask, lol). Yes, fan plants often double as emergency exits, but we've been good neighbors there on Joralemon Street. And no, I did not read the links; once I saw what they were referring to, it was 'ho-hum.'

Want some excitement. Have them investigate the emergency exit that comes out under the Brooklyn Esplanade, south of Fulton
Street. Open that door and step out without looking, and you are history (or maybe a short story somewhere, well maybe an internet blurb).

OK, I scanned the Huffington thing after typing the above. Officer McMillan (16 year veteran) says he rides the front of the train and scans the tracks with a FLASHLIGHT!! What, the headlights of the train are not good enough? His flashlight is brighter than the sealed beams?

These are the same types of P/O's who during the York Street (F line, entrance to tube) fire herded passengers to the wrong end of the station. They may know where the under-river tunnel entrance is, but don't know the station layout.

And, at the risk of abuse, why is the booth now covered with subway maps? To conceal the fact that it is not manned? To let the P/O sleep in piece? I mean, this has been going on since they were installed; no news here.

Washington DC has two similar structures.

This one houses air conditioning cooling tower and this one houses a traction power substation and an air conditioning cooling tower.

The truck parked in front of the first one kind of gives away who own the property.

I guess your right. Another pseudo-secret is the platform underneath the Waldorf-Astoria. This one has been the subject of a few TV shows as well, but there never was anything secret about it, just forgotten.

It was well known to railfans in the 60's. I visted it back in the 1980's. There was a sign on the elevator for Pacific Fruit Express. It may have been used at one time for fresh fruit deliveries to the hotel.

What's the point of even making this entrance information public in the first place to the average person ? what the hell is the MTA and the NYPD thinking ? just leave it alone we all know what these people want and that is to kill people, just don't give out anything that has anything to do with these entrances at all.
If no one knew about these what's the harm ? shessh.... Karl M

Good grief, it has nothing to do with an NYPD anti-terror plan. I saw something in passing on CNN today, showing NYPD anti-terror helicopters circling around the city, looking for "suspicious activity". This included a flyover of the Coney Island Yards. They said the subways park here, and they look for anything "out of place".

Seems to me this is the usual media ignorance about anything to do with trains. How can the fake house be 'part of the anti-terror plans' - except as a vulnerable point needing guarding? The facade was built, as I understand it, to preserve the lok of the street when the subway was built, rather than have the street look 'gap-toothed'.

London, incidenatlly, has a near-identical case (see http://www.urban75.org/london/leinster.html)

Water pumping stations in residential neighborhoods are commonly built to look like homes for this reason-- just for looks, not to "hide" anything. This is nothing new.
