Bring Back the "Two-Fare Zone"?

Would it help the MTA if the two-fare zone was brought back, ie, if the free train-bus transfers were eliminated? It would bring in more fare revenue without raising fares.

Just a thought.

It would bring in more fare revenue without raising fares.

Someone who lives in a two-fare zone would have to pay $4.50 each way without the transfer from bus to subway instead of $2.25. Not too many people are going to like that!

Bad idea. Because of these two-fare zones ridership increased dramatically over the years. New bus routes were created and more buses were ordered. If anything the MTA should eliminate the card bonuses so riders use the system for how much they pay for, and nothing else.

That is raising fares.

And I thought you meant putting a zone structure in such as with WMATA. What with the Metrocards, it's now possible.

The dollar vans would come back with a vengeance. Bus ridership would plummet as commuters would use local vans to go from their house to the local subway or commuter rail station.

Then you have to put in extra turnstiles (maybe the ones used now can be modified for two-way, and add Metrocard vending machines inside fare control for people who are short money when exiting (ain't going to happen here!).

Why shift the burden from all to a select group of people?

That is one reason why I am happy the fares are coming back to SIR, because it is unfair to all of us who have to pay our fare to ride the subway/bus, but they can ride most of the line for free.

Now, I do think they should get free xfers to buses/subways and vice versa and at night/weekends when the ferries run less frequent the 2 hour limit should be extended, but yes bring back fares to SI.

In this scenario, the TA gets the same revenue while eventually offering less service (as passengers switch from buses to dollar vans, the TA could reduce bus service).

No. It's not their fault that the network is structured in such a way as to make them transfer. And trying to structure a transfer-free network is an economic disaster: just look at those express beese.

I agree that a transfer-free network would be extremely impractical, but I don't understand how that relates to express buses. Transfers are possible, as long as you have MetroCard. You just pay the step-up if coming from local bus or subway. Transfers are also free between express buses. Hence, when I used to travel between Douglaston and Marine Park regularly, instead of Q30 or Q46 to subway to B2 or B100 ($4 MetroCard money in 2008), I would frequently do QM1A to BM4 ($5 MetroCard money in 2008). I did not travel enough to warrant an Unlimited, but if I had an unlimited, of course, the subway usually won out (though every now and then I'd treat myself to an express-bus-plus, just to ride in style for a week, doing little to no walking).

The way those routes are designed is very everywhere-to-everywhere. Entire routes are duplicated between Downtown and Midtown branches just to save people from having to transfer to the subway or another bus.

I have done Express bus to express bus transfer occasionally. The problem is making sure the bus schedules fit in the 2 hour window.
ONe time I did the X28 to 4C..

You nailed it!
Two-fare zones will never happen again, and if it did it would be the stupidest thing the MTA ever did. You know how much ridership they'd lose?

And I did it from the BM-1 to the old NY Bus Service Morris Park bus (whatever that route number is).

BTW, the 2 hour window is not that strict, I believe it stretches to 2 hours and 18 minutes, or something to that effect. On several occasions, I would take the downtown #1 train from 28th Street to South Ferry, take the Ferry to Staten Island, take the SIR to Grant City, walk to Hylan Boulevard, eat dinner at White Castle, and then take the S-79 to Brooklyn, all on one fare.

Yes, it is 2:18. The reason is if the first clock time is wrong.
It was always over by 18 mins. from the start.

Why additional transfers? Why not unlimited transfers?

I think swiping in with pay per ride metrocards should provide somebody with 2:18 worth of unlimited rides.

For those who are wondering why it's 18 minutes, 18 minutes is exactly .3 hours. Lots of systems use decimal fractions of hours instead of minutes. Like old-timey employee time-card systems.

"Employee cards cannot swipe again for 6 minutes."

The whole MetroCard system is set up in 6-minute intervals; we discovered this, the hard way, when we were doing incident investigations in System Safety. For example, an employee's pass showed him boarding his usual bus at 10:06 p.m. each night. Did that bus arrive punctually every night at 10:06 p.m.? Unlikely. Answer was, it turned out, that he boarded sometime between 10:06 and 10:11:59 p.m.

Or at least that was the case 10-years ago or so; if they have refined the system, more power to them.
